Penguins clip Red Storm in overtime

Owen scores 17, Jones pulls down career-best rebounding total

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Mark Lewis did not score his first point of Thursday's Pacific West Conference game with Dixie State College until the 5:04 mark of the second half. Ten minutes and an overtime period later, Lewis had 13 points and four critical steals to lead the host Penguins to a 73-72 victory over the Red Storm at the Conlan Center.

Dixie State had an eight-point lead with 11:36 left in regulation, but saw the Penguins chip away the advantage to two points heading into the final media timeout. Lewis sparked an 8-0 run with a pair of steals and two huge buckets. Dominican built a four-point lead before Maurice Cole (Norwalk, CA/Santa Fe) and Griffon Jones (Cheney, WA/Cheney) each hit a pair of free throws to force an extra period.

The momentum in overtime was set early after Xander McNally stuck back a Lewis three-point miss with a dunk. Jacob Noisat scored seven points in the overtime period; his last free throw gave Dominican a six-point lead with 58 seconds.

In the final 20 seconds, Kimball Payne (Alpine, UT/Lone Peak) made a lay-in and drained a three-pointer to close within a point with 4.7 seconds. After the shot, a flagrant loose-ball foul levied upon Solomon Jensen (Centerville, UT/Viewmont) gave Dominican two foul shots, both missed by Noisat, and possession.

Landon Clegg (Cedar Hills, UT/Lone Peak) and McKay Massey (Payson, UT/Payson) pressured the subsequent inbounds pass and forced a steal. Nearly instantaneously, Lewis dove and stripped the ball away and called timeout with 0.3 seconds remaining to secure the win.

The teams played to a 31-31 stalemate in the first half. Derek Owen (St George, UT/Dixie) and Dalton Groskreutz (Santa Clara, UT/Snow Canyon) each had 10 points in the first 20 minutes. Neither team enjoyed a lead of more than four points in the first half. Jeff Rerucha led all Penguin scorers with 11 points, besting his season average by 10 points before half.

An 8-3 start to the second half gave Dixie State (7-4, 2-1 PWC) a five-point cushion. Cole hit three free throws after being fouled on a triple attempt for the game's biggest advantage midway through the second half.

Dominican (3-10, 2-0 PWC) stepped up the defensive pressure, more in the final two minutes of regulation. The Penguins scored 24 points off 20 Dixie State turnovers.

Owen led all scorers with 17 points and Jones posted nine points with a career-best 12 rebounds. Cole registered 16 points while Groskreutz poured in 14.

The Red Storm bested the Penguins in field goal percentage (51.9 to 44.6 percent) and rebounds (35-30). It was the first loss suffered to Dominican in first all-time meetings.

Dixie State will finish out its three-game Bay Area trip on Saturday when they face the Argonauts of Notre Dame de Namur. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. Pacific (4 p.m. Mountain) from Walter Gleason Gymnasium in Belmont, Calif.
