Derek Owen scores 18, Larson sets/ties four season records

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Derek Owen (St George, UT/Dixie) made the most of his second season start leading all Dixie State scorers with 18 points en route to a Pacific West Conference road victory over Academy of Arts 85-72 at Kezar Pavilion.

Four others joined Owen in double figures for Dixie State (7-3, 2-0 PWC) – McKay Massey (Payson, UT/Payson) had 16 points, Griffon Jones (Cheney, WA/Cheney) had 15 points, while Maurice Cole (Norwalk, CA/Santa Fe) and Steven Larson (South Jordan, UT/Copper Hills) each chipped in 14. Leading the way for the Urban Knights (2-10, 0-2 PWC) was shooting guard Ameer Shamsud-din, who lit up the scoreboard for a game-high 28 points.

The Red Storm took the reins of the game midway through the first half. With the game tied at 12-12, Owen and Larson began a 12-0 run with four consecutive buckets. Jones added two shots and Dalton Groskreutz (Santa Clara, UT/Snow Canyon) ended the spurt with an elbow jumper assisted by Kimball Payne (Alpine, UT/Lone Peak).

DSC increased the lead to as much as 16 points twice before the Knights drained free throws to make the score 34-24 in favor of the Red Storm at halftime.

Free throws from DeQuan Thompson (Las Vegas, NV/Lake Mead Christian Academy) and Groskreutz moved DSC ahead by 14 with 13 minutes left in regulation, but the Knights strung together nine straight points capped by Shamsud-din's lay-in. Massey cauterized the bleeding with a three-ball from the wing to stabilize the advantage.

The Knights would get no closer than seven points before the game turned into a battle of free-throws. Both teams found themselves in the bonus early in the half.

Dixie State shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half and finished the night 25-of-48 (52.1 percent). Despite a better performance in the final 20 minutes, the Urban Knights 7-of-30 clip in the first half (23 percent) kept the club to under 40 percent on the night (25-68, 36.8%). Will Overton, Jr., was the only other Knight in double figures with 11 points.

Larson tied or exceeded four season highs – points, rebounds (5), assists (2) and blocks (3). Jones cleaned up nine rebounds while Cole ripped down a career-high eight boards.

Dixie State continues its Bay Area road trip with a Thursday night matchup at Dominican University. The Penguins defeated Grand Canyon 72-62 on Tuesday.
