Hayes scores 27 in Red Storm 80-71 win over Hawaii Pacific

ST. GEORGE - Junior guard Erica Hayes (East Palo Alto, CA/Menlo-Atherton) tied a career-high with 27 points and added 10 rebounds, earning her first career double-double, leading Dixie State College to an 80-71 Pacific West Conference victory over Hawaii Pacific University on Saturday.

DSC head coach Angie Kristensen earned her 100th win on the Red Storm bench in the process.
 
Dixie State (10-5, 5-2 PWC) won the battle of the boards by outrebounding Hawaii Pacific (10-7, 4-3 PWC) 49-37.
 
The Red Storm held serve in the first half despite shooting just 37.5 percent and allowing the Sea Warriors to shoot 51.7 percent. The teams were tied at 38 at the half.
 
Coach Angie Kristensen said, “I thought our kids did a great job. That's a good win because HPU has so many weapons and is a tough team to guard.”
 
A strong defensive performance in the second half helped propel the Red Storm on two different runs. The first came with the game tied at 44, a layup by Shanae Vaifanua (Hurricane, UT/Hurricane) capped a 10-3 run to build a seven point lead with 10:33 left in the game.
 
The second run game just two minutes later leading 55-50, another layup by Vaifanua capped a 13-0 run and gave the Red Storm its largest lead of 16 points.
 
The Red Storm committed a season low 14 turnovers and shot a solid 40.3 percent for the game, while holding the PacWest's leading scoring Mana Hopkins to her average of 18 points.
 
Kristensen continued, “I was proud of our effort tonight and we took care of the ball tonight.”
 
A career high seven assists for Hayes helped propel the Red Storm to victory. Vaifanua finished 13 points and nine rebounds and Adams chipped in 14 rebounds.
 
Erica Hayes (East Palo Alto, CA/Menlo-Atherton) had one of her best games in a Dixie uniform. Shanae was amazing as well, it was just a great team effort,” concluded Kristensen.
 
The Red Storm now prepare for Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday night. It closes out the four game home stand for the Red Storm. Tip off is slated for 5:00 p.m.
