Cole's craftiness leads Dixie State to home win over Grand Canyon

ST. GEORGE – Tied at the half, Dixie State College began the second half of play with 13 unanswered points, building a cushion the Red Storm would ride to a 73-56 win in Pacific West Conference play against the Grand Canyon Antelopes.

Maurice Cole (Norwalk, CA/Santa Fe) scored 11 of his 16 points after intermission for the Red Storm (10-4, 5-1 PWC), who captured their third consecutive league win.

Kyle Speed (12 points) and Braylon Pickrel (11 points, nine rebounds) were the only Grand Canyon (8-5, 2-3 PWC) players in double figures.

“We matched their intensity after being unable to break the press early,” DSC head coach Jon Judkins said. “The run to start the second half proved we could run when we wanted to and take it to a pretty good team.”

GCU flustered the home team with a high-energy press that led to 13 Red Storm turnovers in the first half. Extra opportunities gave the Lopes a 10-point lead with 7:22 left before the break. The Storm responded by instituting a press of its own and reeling off nine straight points, part of an 18-5 run.

Three Canyon free throws knotted the game at halftime, 33-33.

DSC snapped the tie with a 13-0 run over the first 3:39 of the second half. McKay Massey (Payson, UT/Payson) sparked the run with his lone 3-pointer. Four short-range shots and two free throws later, the Storm led 46-33.

GCU chipped away at the lead, closing within five. Massey turned the tide with his sticky fingers. The junior guard tied a single-game DSC record with six steals, leading the way as the Storm swiped 13 steals – a team best in 2011-12.

The Red Storm shot 49.1 percent from the floor and outrebounded GCU 38-29.

Dixie State plays Saturday inside the Burns Arena against Hawaii Pacific. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
