SB: Red Storm Lose Finale 2-1 to UC San Diego

TURLOCK, CA-In the silver bracket semi-final game of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions the Dixie State College softball team was outdueled 2-1 by University of California at San Diego.

UCSD (25-7) scored after two walks by Red Storm (15-8) starter Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School). Manuel singled up the middle, plating the first run of the game.

The game remained at 1-0 until the fourth inning when Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) hit her 7th home run of the season. It was a solo shot tying the game at 1-1.

The only real chance for the Red Storm in the game was in the top of the 5th inning when Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) reached on error and Brittnie Miller (Moab. UT/Grand High School) doubled. But, Brown was thrown out at third base trying to advance. UCSD starter Gaito, who improved to 17-1, would get a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat.

With the game still tied, UCSD loaded the bases on a single and two walks. The next batter Manuel picked up the game winning RBI in the bottom of the fifth. It was her second RBI of the game.

Despite a solid outing, Folta picked up the loss dropping to 6-5 on the season. McFarland, Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School), Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) and Miller each had hits for DSC.

Dixie State will now begin an eight game PacWest Conference home stand. They will host Dominican University on Wednesday and Thursday in doubleheaders beginning at 3:00 PM. They will then have a day off and host Academy of Art on Saturday and Sunday in doubleheaders at 12:00 PM each day.
