SB: Cue's Grand Slam Lift's Red Storm to 7-3 Win, drop second game

CEDAR CITY, UT-Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) laser grand slam to right center field in the top of the seventh inning led the Dixie State College softball team to a come from behind 7-3 win over Southern Utah University at Kathryn Berg Field.

Trailing 3-2, Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) started things off with a single up the middle and Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) and Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) drew one out walks to load the bases. Cue then hit a 0-1 fastball over the right center field fence to give the Red Storm (23-10) a 6-3 lead.

Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) would single and Cassi Merrill (Calgary, Alberta/Foundations for the Future Charter Academy) tripled down the right field line to plate the last Dixie State run.

Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) pitched a complete game to improve to 11-5 on the year. She allowed 8 hits and struck three while allowing three earned runs.

The Red Storm scored first in the top of the fourth inning when Cue doubled to right center and moved to third on a passed ball. Kylee Higgins (Layton. UT/Layton High School) picked up an RBI on a ground out to shortstop.

The Thunderbirds (19-22) responded on a solo home run by designated hitter Madison Resley.

Dixie State picked up its second run in the 5th inning when Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School) reached on an error and then stole second base. She advanced to third base on a groundout and scored the Red Storm 2nd run on a wild pitch.

Southern Utah would respond and take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Heather Richardson deposited the Folta pitch over the left field fence to take a 3-2 lead.

Cue and Merrill led the Red Storm with two hits apiece.

In game two, it was all Southern Utah. The Thunderbirds had ten hits and two home runs and capitalized on an early Red Storm error to win 10-1 in five innings.

Hoch and Resley each had three RBI while collecting two hits for Southern Utah.

Brittnie Miller (Moab. UT/Grand High School) dropped to 9-3 on the season allowing seven hits and seven runs, while striking out one in three and 2/3 innings.

Judkins led Dixie State with two hits in the loss.

Dixie State will conclude its PacWest home schedule on Friday at 4 PM and Saturday at Noon. Both days the Red Storm will play doubleheaders against Grand Canyon University at Karl Brooks Field.
