SB: Snow and Higgins lead Red Storm to Sweep of Thunderbirds

SAINT GEORGE, UT-Kylee Higgins (Layton. UT/Layton High School) hit a solo home run and an RBI single to right centerfield and Brittnie Miller (Moab. UT/Grand High School) pitched a complete game in the first game of a doubleheader against Southern Utah University today at Karl Brooks Field. The Red Storm swept Thunderbirds 3-1 and 4-3.

After Southern Utah (9-18) scored and unearned run in the top of the first inning, Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) hit and RBI single to right center to get the Red Storm (12-3) on the board.

In the top of the 7th, Lea Purcell lined a ball to left field that would have easily gone for extra bases and Red Storm leftfielder Kourtnie Schlacter (Mira Loma. CA/Jurupa Valley High School) made an outstanding diving catch to quell the SUU momentum.

Miller struck out six batters and allowed six hits to improve to 6-1 on the year.

For the Thunderbirds, six different players had hits and Black dropped to 8-7 on the season.

In game two, Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) pitched in relief of Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) and picked up her first collegiate win. Snow struck out two batters and allowed two hits and only one run in four innings of work.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Cue picked up her second RBI single of the day scoring Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) and cutting the lead to 2-1.

The Red Storm capitalized on four Thunderbird errors in the second game. Scoring an unearned run in the fourth and two in the sixth inning to take the lead at 4-1.

Schlacter and Ryanne Dacosin (Kaneohe, HI/Castle High School) would lead the bottom of the 6th off with two singles. Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School) would reach on a fielding error by the second baseman and as the ball caromed away from the fielder Schlacter would score from second and Dacosin would reach third base.

Dacosin would score on the next play when Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) would execute a perfect sacrifice squeeze play to give the Red Storm a two-run cushion.

Southern Utah would load the bases in the bottom of the 7th inning and only score one run when the pitch hit Henderson with the bases loaded.

Hoch and Henderson each had two hits for the Thunderbirds in the loss.

For the Red Storm, Dacosin and Schlacter each had two hits.

Dixie State will have eight days off before they travel to San Francisco to play a neutral site contest with Hawaii Pacific University. They will conference games prior to the famous Tournament of Champions starts on April 1st in Turlock, CA.
