SB: Red Storm Sweep Doubleheader at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, AZ-Two superb pitching performances led the Dixie State College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Grand Canyon University. The Red Storm won 3-1 and 8-1.

In game one, Brittnie Miller (Moab. UT/Grand High School) struck out 11 Antelope (11-9, 5-4 PWC) batters, pitching a complete game allowing just five hits and one earned run. Miller improved to 4-1 on the year.

Cassie Merrill singled to left field to lead off the fourth inning and then stole second base. Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) would give the Red Storm (8-3, 6-0 PWC) an early 2-0 lead.

In the Grand Canyon part of the 4th of inning, Miller would have to pitch her way out of trouble after giving up and RBI single to Rasmussen. She would strike Rasmussen out to end the Antelope threat.

Dixie State would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Kourtnie Schlacter (Mira Loma. CA/Jurupa Valley High School) doubled to left field and was sacrificed to third on a bunt by Ryanne Dacosin (Kaneohe, HI/Castle High School). Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School) would single to second base allowing Schlacter to score from third base.

Judkins led DSC with two hits.

In game two, Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) would allow one run on four hits and struck three batters. She improved to 4-2 on the year.

The Red Storm struck first with Judkins singling to center field to lead off the 3rd inning and would score on an RBI single by McFarland to lead 1-0.

But the rest of the damage was done in the three run fifth inning and the four run sixth inning.

Judkins picked up two more hits and an RBI, McFarland added a hit and an RBI. Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) made her first appearance of the season by picking up two hits. Schlacter had a RBI single and a bases loaded walk for her two RBI.

The Red Storm will play at home on Tuesday against Weber State University starting at 3:00 PM at Karl Brooks Field.
