LAS VEGAS, NV
-The Dixie State College softball team began its 2011 campaign with a 4-1 victory over Central Washington today in the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas, NV.

In the opening frame the Red Storm (1-0, 0-0) struck first. Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) drew a two out walk and Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) followed with a sharp single to right field advancing McFarland to third base.

With Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) at the plate, Mendenhall broke for second base and as the catcher attempted to throw to 2nd to cut down the runner, her throw hit the bat of Egge and allowed McFarland to score on the play giving the Red Storm the early 1-0 lead.

Central Washington tied the game up in the bottom of the 2nd inning on a Jusko solo home run to centerfield. It would be the only real scoring chances they would have all game long.

The Red Storm battled back in the top of the fourth inning when Cassie Merrill singled to center field and advanced to 2nd on a Ryanne Dacosin (Kaneohe, HI/Castle High School) groundout.

With Merrill at 2nd base, Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School) picked up her 2nd hit of the day on a single to right field scoring Merrill from 2nd. Judkins advanced to second on the throw to the plate.

In the Red Storm's final at bat in the top of the 7th inning, Judkins would single on a bunt to third base, her third hit of the game. McFarland would follow with a moon shot to centerfield giving the Red Storm a 4-1 advantage.

Brittnie Miller (Moab. UT/Grand High School) pitched seven strong innings, allowing only two hits and two earned runs, while striking out four CWU batters.

DIXIE STATE 5 MSU-BILLINGS 9- The Red Storm would strike first, Dacosin would lead the game off with a walk and advance on a wild pitch. Judkins would single to shortstop, advancing Dacosin to third.

Judkins would steal second base and move to third base on Mendenhall's RBI squeeze bunt that scored Dacosin. Egge would follow with an RBI single thru the left side, giving the Red Storm an early 2-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets would get to Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) in the third inning. Two singles and a Hoffman two run home run would give MSUB the 4-2 lead.

MSUB would chase Folta from the game in the 5th inning and then also tap reliever Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) for a couple of runs as well. The Yellow Jackets would score three runs on four hits in the inning.

Hoffman would hit her second home run of the game in the sixth inning giving MSUB the 9-2 lead.

Mendenhall would lead the top of the 6th off with a laser shot home run down the third base line. Egge would follow with a walk, Hart singled to left field and Higgins would walk to load the bases.

Kourtnie Schlacter (Mira Loma. CA/Jurupa Valley High School) had an eight pitch battle picking up an RBI bases loaded walk and the Red Storm looked like they were going to break the game open.

But MSUB pitcher Annaleisha Parsley retired three consecutive batters to get out of the bases loaded jam. Parsley halted the Red Storm threat and took a 9-4 lead into the final frame.

In the bottom of the 7th inning, McFarland drew a walk and Mendenhall reached on fielding error by the shortstop.

Egge would ground into a fielders choice and advance to second and McFarland would score on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Then the lights went out!!! Due to a light ordinance at the facility, the game will be completed at 11:00 AM on Saturday morning.

Upon returning to the field on Saturday morning, the Red Storm were retired by a pop up and a ground out to end the game.

Dixie State is scheduled to play Humboldt State tomorrow night at 7:30 PM PT.
