Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. – Led by career high point totals by McKay Massey (Payson, UT/Payson) and Steven Larson (South Jordan, UT/Copper Hills), Dixie State men's basketball earned the championship of the Grand Canyon Holiday Classic defeating Saint Martin's 77-60 on Saturday afternoon.

Massey scored 19 points, hitting on seven of his eight shots including a trio of 3-pointers for Dixie State (6-3). Off the bench, Larson played quality minutes late in the first half. His 14 points came on six-of-seven shooting.

Saint Martin's (4-6) scored the game's first five points, only to see Maurice Cole (Norwalk, CA/Santa Fe) hit a triple try and Griffon Jones (Cheney, WA/Cheney) knocked down a jumper to tie the festivities. The lead flip-flopped five times until the Coyotes took a 20-19 lead at the 10:12 mark.

The Red Storm stepped up the team defense and revved up the offensive engines with an 8-0 run acting as the catalyst for a subsequent 26-5 spurt closing the half. Mitch Frei (Santa Clara, UT/Snow Canyon) tipped in a Cole miss at the buzzer. Dixie State enjoyed a 45-25 lead at intermission.

Neither club missed a shot for nearly three minutes to open the second half. A pair of Larson free throws put Dixie State ahead by its largest margin, 25 points, with 10:20 left. SMU began trapping and double-teaming, a tactic that earned turnovers against the Storm and open looks at the bucket. The Saints pulled within 15 points, but with only 1:25 remaining in regulation. Larson capped his career-night with an assisted lay-in from Kimball Payne (Alpine, UT/Lone Peak) on the final possession.

DSC finished the night connecting on 52.6 percent from the floor (30-57) and outrebounded the Saints 40-24. Massey led all Storm players with eight rebounds with Jones and DeQuan Thompson (Las Vegas, NV/Lake Mead Christian Academy) each ripping down six. Jones chipped in 16 points

Jeremy Green led Saint Martin's with 19 points. Brady Bomber and Brok Pendleton had 10 points apiece.

Dixie State has the rest of the calendar year off. The club returns to action on Jan. 3, 2012 at Academy of Art for Pacific West Conference play. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Pacific (8:30 p.m. Mountain) from the historic Kezar Pavlion in San Francisco.
