Hot UCSD shooting leads Tritons to Sunday win over Dixie State

Derek Owen leads DSC with 17 points off the bench

Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif. - Christian Hatch led all scorers with 19 points helping UC San Diego shoot over 50 percent for the game to defeat Dixie State College 81-67 in non-conference action from the RIMAC Arena.

Dixie State College (4-3) received 17 points from Derek Owen (St George, UT/Dixie) off the bench and an additional 13 points for De'Quan Thompson in the losing effort.

UCSD (4-4) staged a 15-0 run over five minutes in the first half to build a 17-2 lead while DSC used the rest of the half to shave the margin closer. Down 12 at the 8:07 mark, the Red Storm used a pair of Griffon Jones (Cheney, WA/Cheney) free throws, a 3-pointer from Maurice Cole (Norwalk, CA/Santa Fe) and two Solomon Jensen (Centerville, UT/Viewmont) lay-ins as part of a 13-2 run to pull within five at 26-21.

Mike Meza hit two of his three first-half 3-pointers over the final minutes to give the host Tritons a 39-26 lead at half.

Just like the first half, UCSD used a distinct run to distance them from Dixie State. Over the first five minutes of the second half, the Tritons staged a 16-5 run including a 11-point string for a commanding 25-point lead.

Hatch had 13 points in the second half to make sure Dixie State stayed out of range; the Red Storm never got the deficit under 15 points at any point over the final 20 minutes.

Owen had a spectacular game hitting on seven-of-12 shots from the field and three-of-five from the free throw for a season-best 17 points.

“I tried to help out the team in any way I could,” Owen said. “But games are not won with a single person. I am proud of my team.”

Thompson hit all five shots he took from the field to match his career-high point total set last Monday against Notre Dame de Namur. Steven Larson (South Jordan, UT/Copper Hills) and Cole each had nine points a piece for Dixie State.

The Red Storm were held to 38.8 percent shooting during the game (26-of-67) while UCSD were 51.9 percent for the afternoon – including eight-of-15 from behind the arc.

Dixie State returns to action with a pair of games next weekend in Phoenix in a tournament hosted by Grand Canyon. DSC tangles with Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at 3 p.m. and faces Saint Martin's on Saturday at the same time. Both games from the GCU Arena will be broadcast on the Red Storm Radio Network.
