Dixie State cut down 45-30 by Lumberjacks at home

Six seniors honored before final home game of 2011

Box Score
ST. GEORGE – Spotting Humboldt State a 31-0 lead early in the third quarter may not have been in the game plan, but it certainly did motivate Dixie State over the final 15:17 of Saturday's conference game. The Red Storm scored all of its points in that span to close the wide scoring gap, but in the end, fell 45-30 to the Jacks to fall to 1-9 on the year and 1-6 in the GNAC.

Freshman quarterback Stefan Cantwell (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) threw for 302 yards, but was outdueled by HSU's Mike Proulx. The senior signal-called tossed five touchdown passes and amassed 328 yards through the air. Cantwell also added 85 net rushing yards despite being sacked four times.

After Brian Blumberg kicked a first quarter field goal, Proulx connected with wide receiver Dirk Dallas for a pair of scores (9, 4 yards), then build the Jacks' 24-0 halftime lead finding Lyndon Rowells open in the middle of the field for another score.

Rowells ran for 184 yards in the game, of which 104 yards came in the first half.

Humboldt (8-1, 6-1 GNAC) extended the lead to 31-0 six minutes into the third. Tommy Darcey made his lone grab count, a seven-yard TD reception from Proulx.

Dixie State finally struck the scoreboard in the waning moments of the third quarter. Cantwell hit Joe Don Duncan (Corona, CA/Notre Dame) for a 49-yard completion taking the Storm into HSU territory. On third-and-one, Zack Fox (Spanish Fork. UT/Spanish Fork HS) brought down 29-yard reception in the end zone give Dixie State its first points.

HSU answered on the subsequent drive when Proulx threw his final TD pass of the day to Daniel Munoz.

Senior running back Jesse Ence (St. George, UT/Pine View), created a lasting memory by breaking a major seam down the middle of the field and scoring from 55 yards out. Ence finished the day with 93 rushing yards.

A HSU punt set up the Red Storm for another scoring drive deep inside the Jacks' territory. Cantwell made a pair of completions before running in the ball from two yards. Duncan snared a pass on the two-point for a 38-22 game.

Sensing a Dixie State comeback, HSU turned the offense back to Proulx and Rowell. Seventy-one yards on two plays via the feet of Rowells tacked on seven points for the Jacks.

Eight minutes remained in the game and Dixie State used the time to manufacture its longest drive of the game. Cantwell and the offense faced only a couple of third down plays, converting on both. With the 12th-play of the series, Cantwell found Duncan despite defensive pass interference for the TD and found Fox for the two-point conversion.

Dixie had the ball late, but could not find a quick enough strike. The game clock struck 00:00 during Cantwell's last reception to Carter.

J.D. Duncan (87-139, TD) topped 100 yards receiving for the fifth straight game

Defensively for Dixie State, Skyler Fullmer (Riverton, UT/Riverton) (11) and Jake Duncan (Corona, CA/Notre Dame) (10) each achieved double digits in tackles. Nick Porrazzo (Rescue. CA/Ponderosa) had three pass breakups in the secondary.

The Red Storm travel to Ellensburg, Wash., next Saturday to bring the 2011 season to an end. Kickoff with Central Washington is a 1 p.m. Mountain from Tomlinson Stadium.

NOTES: The teams combined for 1,019 yards of offense (535 for HSU, 484 for Dixie State)… Dixie State went 8-of-18 on third down, including 7-of-11 on the down in the second half…. Joe Don Duncan (Corona, CA/Notre Dame) need 126 yards receiving at CWU next week to become the first DSC player to reach 1,000 yards in a season… Six seniors were honored before the game: Chris Aragon (Los Angeles, CA/Crespi Carmelite), Aubrey Bel (Los Angeles, CA/Chapparal)l, Caleb Caple (Lake Charles. LA/Barbe), Darren Carter (Sandy, UT/Jordan), Christian Case (West Jordan, UT/West Jordan) and Jesse Ence (St. George, UT/Pine View).
