Cold shooting freezes Red Storm

DSC shoots 28 percent in defensive struggle

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Sophomore guard McKay Massey (Payson, UT/Payson) led all scorers with 14 points, but the Dixie State men's basketball team shot under-30 percent form the floor dropping a 53-49 non-conference game to Colorado State Pueblo during the first day of the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Tip-Off Classic.
 
Dixie State (2-2) shot 15-of-52 from the floor, a mere 28.8 percent. CSUP (2-1) led by three at the break and extended it to as many as 16 points early in the second half.
 
The Thunderwolves opened the game on a 7-2 run, only to see DSC answer with nine straight points. Griffon Jones (Cheney, WA/Cheney) had four of his 11 points to cap the string.
 
Then, the basket got small. Dixie State did not score a field goal from the 14:04 mark of the first half until Massey put in a bucket from the paint nearly eight minutes later. CSUP held DSC scoreless over the final 3:28 of the first period.
 
Ty Trahern single-handedly put the Red Storm behind by 13 scoring the first 10 points of the second half. CSUP continues to hold a 10-point plus lead with six minutes remaining.
 
Down 46-35, the Red Storm went on a 9-0 run thanks in part to a pair of Massey three-pointers. DSC had two chances to tie or take the lead trailing by two – Massey missed a free throw the first try and Kimball Payne (Alpine, UT/Lone Peak) could not connect on a reverse lay-in with the second effort.
 
CSUP responded with a 5-0 run to stymie any DSC comeback.
 
Jones (11 points) joined Massey as the only Red Storm players in double figures. Dalton Groskreutz (Santa Clara, UT/Snow Canyon) pulled down a team-best seven rebounds with Derek Owen (St George, UT/Dixie) adding six boards.
 
Dixie State faces the host school, Colorado Mesa, at 7 p.m. Saturday in the final day of the tournament.
