Red Storm sees halftime lead evaporate in 40-28 loss at WOU

Cantwell, JD Duncan, Carter have noteworthy offensive days in defeat

Box Score

MONMOUTH, Ore. - Freshman quarterback Stefan Cantwell (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) threw for 423 yards while Joe Don Duncan (Corona, CA/Notre Dame) and Darren Carter (Sandy, UT/Jordan) each topped 100 receiving yards Saturday. Unfortunately, Dixie State saw its halftime lead slip away as Western Oregon scored 19 straight points early in the second half en route to a 40-28 win in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Dixie State fell to 1-8 on the season and 1-5 in conference play despite accounting for 447 total yards. The Wolves accumulated 345 of it 509 offensive yards in the second half to improve to 6-1 in the GNAC (6-3 overall).

Cantwell attempted a season-high 52 passes, completing 31 for his first 400-yard passing game in his short collegiate career. It was the second straight week and third in the last four where the QB was responsible for over 400 yards of offense single-handedly.

Duncan also set a season-high with 155 receiving yards on seven catches. Carter also caught seven balls for 115 yards.

The Red Storm took a 7-0 lead scoring on its second offensive possession of the game. Cantwell completed six passes including a seven-yard strike just beyond the goal line to Duncan, completing an 11-play drive that spanned 96 yards.

DSC had five defensive takeaways, the first coming as Skyler Fullmer (Riverton, UT/Riverton) recovered a fumble with 25 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Wolves knotted up the score with a 30-yard Evan Mozzochi (10-24, 175, TD, 2 INT) touchdown strike to freshman receiver Lucas Gonzalves at the 8:35 mark.

After the teams traded possessions with punts, the Red Storm struck quickly for the go-ahead score. Cantwell connected with Duncan on a slant pass and the tight end broke multiple tackles in the 71-yard play.

Tides turned in the third quarter as the Wolves held DSC to one offensive yard and scored 12 points on a safety, a 21-yard Kelly Morgan field goal and Cody VonAppen's rushing TD to lead 19-14.

Western Oregon built its lead to 12 points for the first time at the 12:41 of the fourth quarter as Adryan Allen ran in from 28 yards out to complete a string of 19 points unanswered.

Every time Dixie State scored to pull within five, WOU found an answer. Carter was left wide open deep in the secondary as Cantwell evaded multiple tackles and flung a deep pass to the receiver to make it a 26-21 game.

The Wolves added a short TD pass, only to be answered by Cantwell calling his own number capping a quick 78-yard drive in less than two minutes.

WOU running back Trevor Roush highlighted a solid running performance in the second half with and eight yard TD run to set the final margin.

The Red Storm defense had a pair of interceptions from cornerback Nick Porrazzo (Rescue. CA/Ponderosa) and defensive lineman Levi Henrie (Cheyenne, WY/Central). Chris Spencer (Las Vegas, NV/Cheyenne) led DSC with nine tackles. Brady Loveless (Payson, UT/Payson) and Daniel Moffett (Kaysville, UT/Davis) each added seven tackles.

Dixie State returns home for a Senior Day battle with Humboldt State on Nov. 5 at 1:05 p.m.
