Red Storm lose to CWU 31-24 despite outgaining Wildcats by 120 yards

DSC drops to 1-7 on 2011 season

Box Score

ST. GEORGE – Stefan Cantwell (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) passed for 308 yards and rushed for an additional 102 yards on Homecoming Saturday, yet the Wildcats of Central Washington escaped Hansen Stadium with a 31-24 victory in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest.

CWU evened its league record at 3-3 and improved to 3-4 overall by winning for the first time away from Ellensburg in 2011.  The Red Storm dropped its third straight game and remains with one lone home win this season (Sept. 17 vs. Simon Fraser).

Saturday's stats may be deceiving, since the Red Storm outgained the Wildcats 442-322 in total yardage and won held an edge in nearly every offensive category.

Central took the lead two plays into Dixie State's first drive. Stetson Shearer intercepted Cantwell's first pass attempt and returned it 31 yards for a score. The Red Storm response stalled as a Jameson Schultz (Yucaipa, CA/Yucaipa) field goal missed to the left.

Jose Mohler, making his first start for the Wildcats in place of an injured Ryan Robertson, hooked up with Armahd Lewis on the first of two long touchdown receptions for a 14-0 lead.

On the ensuing drive, Cantwell missed only one pass attempt before setting up Schultz for a 43-yard field goal.

Midway through the second quarter, DSC cut the lead to 14-10 by driving 70 yards in nine plays, culminating in a two-yard TD reception by Joe Don Duncan (Corona, CA/Notre Dame).

Central responded with another quick strike touchdown score to Lewis, a 75-yard pass and catch from Mohler. The Wildcats took a 21-10 lead into halftime.

The teams swapped field goals in the third quarter. Schultz hit from 41 yards out and Sean Davis responded with a 31-yard kick. At 24-13, a third field goal by Schultz pulled the Storm within eight points.

A CWU drive beginning in the third quarter and finishing in the opening ticks of the fourth quarter ended up being a crucial scoring possession. Ishmail Stinson took the final two rushes for a combined 17 yards into the end zone to make the score 31-16.

Down two scores and with possession at the 4:01 mark of the fourth quarter, Dixie State used its two-minute offense and reaped the benefits of CWU penalties. Cantwell found J.D. Duncan for a second strike, and then hit Zack Fox (Spanish Fork. UT/Spanish Fork HS) on the two-point try.

Central wrapped up the game handling Dixie's onside kick and taking three kneel-downs.

J.D. Duncan recorded his third straight game topping the century mark in receiving yards. He made eight grabs for 103 yards. Jake Duncan (Corona, CA/Notre Dame) led the defense with seven tackles (3 TFL), including two sacks.

The Red Storm held Central's running attack to 63 yards on 29 attempts, the first time DSC has held an opposing team to under 150 rushing yards this season.

Fox (75 yards) and running back Jesse Ence (St. George, UT/Pine View) (71 yards) each made six receptions.

Dixie State hits the road next week for a league game against the first-place Wolves of Western Oregon. Kickoff from Monmouth is scheduled for 2 p.m. Mountain (1 p.m. Pacific) from McArthur Field.
