Dixie State surrenders 531 yards in 48-19 loss to Azusa Pacific

Red Storm lose precursor to future GNAC competition

Box Score
ST. GEORGE – Azusa Pacific University rushed for 442 yards as a team en route to a 48-19 non-conference win over Dixie State College at Hansen Stadium on Saturday.

Senior quarterback John van den Raadt netted 145 yards and tailback Johnell Murphy added 142 yards for the NAIA' s tenth-ranked Cougars (6-1).

Dixie State was led by junior place kicker Jameson Schultz (Yucaipa, CA/Yucaipa) and senior running back Jesse Ence (St. George, UT/Pine View).

Schultz set a school-record hitting all four field goal attempts (42, 32, 42, 45) on the game, with Ence totaling 97 all-purpose yards (84 rush, 13 receiving).

The Cougars took an early 7-0 lead as Silas Goma covered up a Nick Grunsky blocked punt in the end zone.

The first of van den Raadt's two rushing scores, a 58-yard scamper, answered a pair of Schultz field goals.

Dixie State closed within 14-9 with a 42-yard Schultz boot at the 9:02 mark of the 2nd quarter.

Azusa Pacific answered with a pair of TD receptions midway through the quarter. Jeremiah Andujo hauled in a 5-yard slant and tight end Tyson Hetzer outjumped the DSC defense for a 12-yard score.

Schultz bombed a final-minute field goal from 45 yards to close out the half with APU holding on to a 28-12 lead.

The Cougars put the game out of reach scoring 17 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarter.

Freshman quarterback Kaleo Nawahine (Fruitland, ID/Fruitland) led the only touchdown drive for Dixie State, finding Spencer Young (Salt Lake City, UT/Olympus) from 15 yards out in the fourth quarter.

Cache Morgan (West Jordan, UT/West Jordan) led the Red Storm with nine tackles, followed by Jake Duncan (Corona, CA/Notre Dame) with eight. Freshman cornerback Adam Hales (Bountiful, UT/Woods Cross) made his first career interception and had five tackles.

Dixie State plays its annual Homecoming game next Saturday against the Central Washington Wildcats in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
