SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (January 20) – Thursday was National Penguin Awareness Day offering a chance to celebrate the cool black and white animal. Dixie State College was only aware that they had to play well to avoid being the first team defeated by the Dominican University men's basketball team.

Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) netted 15 points and five rebounds while the team shot a blistering 58-percent from the field to defeat the host Penguins 74-52 at the Conlan Center, also known as the Igloo, in Pacific West Conference play.

Dixie State (9-4, 2-1 PWC) scorched the Dominican (0-15, 0-5 PWC) defense both inside and out. Maurice Cole (Norwalk, CA/Santa Fe) slashed multiple times to the hoop and hit his lone three-point attempt en route to 13 points. McKay Massey (Payson, UT/Payson) had a near perfect day from the floor for 11 points.

The Red Storm forced 22 Penguin turnovers leading to 30 points.

Dominican sprinted out scoring five of the first six points in the game, but Dixie State responded to tie the game at 7-7. Cole penetrated into the key and hit a right-handed layup to give the Red Storm a lead they would never relinquish. A 9-2 run over the final four minutes of the first half pushed DSC to a 37-20 halftime advantage.

Whitehead hit all three of his triples in the second half, the last put DSC in front by 21 points midway through the second half.

Killian Larson recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Dominican.

Dixie State closes out the San Francisco road swing on Saturday against Notre Dame de Namur at 2 p.m. Pacific.
