Red Storm finish weekend with sweep of Simon Fraser and Cal State LA

Shearer and Fitzferald lead the way

LOS ANGELES, CA- The Dixie State College Volleyball team finished their weekend California road trip with bang by defeating Simon Fraser 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23) in a mid-morning match and rallying from behind to upend Cal State LA 3-2 (25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 16-14).

 

In the first match of the day, the Red Storm jumped out to a quick two games to none lead before dropping the third game. The Red Storm and the Clansman traded points in the third game, before SFU forced four consecutive DSC errors.

 

The Red Storm rebounded in game four, taking a 16-12 lead on an Alex Shearer (Park City. UT/Park City) kill.  DSC would hold off the Clansmen and close the match out on kills from Kelsey Robinson and Shearer's match point.

 

The difference in the match was the net play of the Red Storm. Morgan Hill (Logan. UT/Logan) created a wall with three solo blocks and five assisted blocks. DSC collected 12 blocks as a team for the match.

 

Madisyn Fitzgerald (Mesa, AZ/Mountain View) led the way for DSC collecting 12 kills on her way to hitting a stellar .571. Shearer finished with 11 kills and Jovan Malufau (Laie, HI/Kahuku)-Falemalu collected 31 assists.

 

In the nightcap, DSC rallied from a two games to one deficit to defeat Cal State LA in a fifth set thriller.  

 

Playing the same tune all day, the Red Storm added an additional 10 blocks, with two solo and two assisted coming from Hill. Kimee Clark also threw up a solo block and five assisted.

 

Taking an early lead in the final frame, only to see Cal State LA rally from behind to tie it up at 14-14. The Golden Eagles would commit two of their 37 hitting errors to give the Red Storm the game and the match.

 

Brita Noble led three DSC players with 13 kills, followed by Fitzgerald with 11 kills and Shannon Young (Whittier, CA/St Paul) 10 kills.

 

Besides blocking well, Clark added 31 assists to stellar performance.

 

Dixie State improved to 3-1 on the season and will travel this next weekend to Gunnison, CO for a tournament with the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
