Jacks Dominate First Half En Route to 49-14 Win at DSC

ST. GEORGE, UT – The Humboldt State running back combination of Lyndon Rowells and Daniel Wyatt combined for 268 of the team's 300 total rushing yards in the Lumberjacks' 49-14 victory over Dixie State College in GNAC play on Saturday at Hansen Stadium.

Rowells netted 168 yards on 17 carries showing off streaks of quickness and flashes of power throughout the night. Wyatt ended with an even 100 yards on 10 rushes.

For DSC, Keauntea Bankhead (Seattle, WA/Ballard) had a monster game on the defensive side of the ball setting a new Dixie State single game record with 17 tackles (seven solo).

The Jacks (1-1, 1-0 GNAC) convincingly outplayed the Red Storm (0-3, 0-2 GNAC) in the first half. HSU took a 42-0 halftime lead outgaining the home club 406-73 in total yardage.

After the break, Dixie State played a more consistent game with a solid running attack from Adam Wells (Kenmore. WA/Inglemoor) and Jesse Ence (St. George, UT/Pine View). Wells totaled 66 yards on 15 carries while Ence rushed for 62 yards with three less attempts.

Cody Stevenson (Sandy, UT/Juan Diego) captained the DSC ship with another solid performance – 17-for-32 and 225 passing yards. The true-freshman was hurried and hit a few times, but was never brought down for a sack.

Rowells began the scoring barrage for Humboldt with an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage with 6:18 left in the first quarter. The Jacks perfectly executed a trick play as QB Mike Proulx threw a screen to Sergio Allen who stopped outside the hash and fired to a wide-open Chris Henry for a 63-yard score.

HSU increased their lead with a 28-point second quarter scoring effort. Jordan McGowin-Smith scooped a Wells fumble at the DSC 18-yard line and took it to the house. Rowells scored a second TD by breaking tackles, scampering 13 yards and diving past the goal line. Proulx then found two different receivers late in the quarter – Matt Devlin for 52 yards and Henry for 23 yards – for the commanding halftime advantage.

After a scoreless third quarter, Dixie State completed their longest drive at the 12:56 mark of the fourth quarter – 11 plays – with a Stevenson pass to TE Alex Nelsen (Brigham City. UT/Box Elder HS) for 14 yards and a score to end Humboldt's chance at a shutout.

Wyatt broke through for a 57-yard TD run to cap the Jacks' scoring and push the score to 49-7.

With 35 seconds left in the game, the Red Storm took the ball at their own 30. Stevenson connected with Caleb Caple (Lake Charles. LA/Barbe) for 43 yards setting up first down at the HSU 27-yard line. After a procedure penalty backed up the line of scrimmage five yards, Kyser Christensen (Boise. ID/Centennial) hauled in Stevenson pass for 32 yards in the left corner of the end zone.

Christensen topped the DSC receiver corps with 77 yards followed by Nelsen (3-53), Caple and Nash Fowler (Orem, UT/Timpanogas HS) who made five catches for 30 yards.

WR Darren Carter (Sandy, UT/Jordan) found a new calling as the kickoff return specialist accounting for 149 yards on six comebacks including a long of 35 yards.

The game marked the third straight time in which Red Storm recorded 14 total points. They also did not allow their opponent to score in the third quarter for the third time in 2010.

Dixie State will travel to Ellensburg, WA next Saturday (Sept. 18) for its second meeting of the season with Central Washington University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00pm Mountain.
