Box Score 2 BRISBANE, CA-Dixie State College softball team split a doubleheader with Academy of Art University on Sunday afternoon 2-12 and 8-1. The games were the final PacWest games of the year for both teams.
In game one, the Urban Knights belted two grand slam home runs to take a run-ruled shortened off Red Storm starter
Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School). Folta surrendered 10 hits and allowed 12 runs going the distance.
Dixie State only managed four hits in the game. The highlight was
Shantae Hunter (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls High School)'s 2 RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The loss broke the Red Storm's 12-game winning streak.
GAME TWO: DSC 8 AAU 1. In game two, Brittnie Whipple continued her domination and built her scoreless innings streak to 24 consecutive until the Urban Knights lone run broke it in the top of the 4th inning.
DSC got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when
Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) doubled to center field and scored on
Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) double to center field as well. Cassie Merrill capped off the two run inning with a triple to right field scoring Brown.
In the Red Storm third inning
Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) doubled to center field scoring McFarland and
Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School).
McFarland and Cue picked up their second hits of the game leading off the fifth with back to back singles. Brown then doubled to left field scoring McFarland. The Red Storm led 6-1 thru five.
Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) tripled to center field to lead off the 6
th and scored on
Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) home run to left field. Five Red Storm players had multiple hits in the game.
Whipple finished the game allowing only five hits, while striking out eight AAU batters to improve to 16-6 on the year.
Currently ranked #7 in the West Region polls, the Red Storm are considered a bubble team to make the playoffs and will have to wait and see the outcome of the CCAA tournament this next weekend. The final regular season poll is scheduled for Wednesday April 28th and the tournament announcement is set for May 2nd.
Dixie State concluded its season by hosting Southern Utah University on Saturday May 1st at 1:00 PM at Karl Brooks Field. The game is the annual Swing for Life game, with all the proceeds going for breast cancer awareness.
