Red Storm win two more at TOC, advance to Gold Bracket play Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TURLOCK, CA-Day two at the Tournament of Champions for the Dixie State College softball team started the same way it ended for them last night with a win.  Dixie State College defeated Cal State University Dominguez Hills 6-2.

Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) threw a complete game five hitter allowing just two runs and striking out four on her way to picking up her 10th victory of the year.

The Red Storm struck early, plating a run in the bottom of the second when Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) doubled to center field to lead off the inning. After being sacrificed to third by Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School), Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) roped a two run, ground-rule double to left center scoring Mendenhall that gave DSC an the early 1-0 lead.

Folta's only blemish came in the top of third inning when CSUDH battled back for two runs collecting three hits in the inning.

Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) singled through the left side to lead off the bottom of the third. She would steal second and third and eventually score on a passed ball. Her run would knot the score at two.

Dixie State would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when they would erupt for four runs. Hicken would collect her second single of the game and then steal second base. Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) would pick up the eventual game winner by singling down the left field line plating Hicken from second base.

Mendenhall was hit by a pitch and both runners would then advance on a throwing error by the CSUDH catcher. Mendenhall would score on McFarland's infield single giving DSC a 4-2 lead.

Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) would add her third RBI of the game when she singled through right side scoring both Egge and McFarland. DSC led 6-2 and would hold the Toros in the final two frames.

DSC 4 SFSU 0: After playing the 8 AM game against CSUDH, the Red Storm had to wait almost six hours before playing San Francisco State University. The down time didn't seem to have much effect on the team leaving right where they left off.

Dixie State would give starting pitcher Brittnie Whipple three runs in the top of the 1st inning which would be enough for another strong pitching performance for the Red Storm.

Whipple would hold SFSU to just three hits and strike out six over seven innings and pitched her fifth shutout and 10th complete game of the year. It was her 9th win of the year.

Despite only collecting three hits in the game, DSC collected two of them in the top of the first. After a Shantae Hunter (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls High School) walk and steal of second base and a Mendenhall walk. McFarland hit a two out 2RBI double to right center field giving DSC a 2-0 lead.

Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) would single through the left side moving McFarland to third base and she would score on a delayed steal by Cue that allowed McFarland to score before being tagged out.

The Red Storm would add an insurance run on a squeeze bunt by Mendenhall in the 3rd inning that scored Hicken.

Dixie State finishes the round robin portion of the tournament with a 4-1 record and it appears they will advance to the Gold portion of the bracket tomorrow morning. Both the one and the two seed from their pool advance onto the Gold bracket. The games are scheduled to start at either 11:15 AM PT or 11:30 AM PT.
