TURLOCK, CA-Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) hit a three run homer in the 5th inning to propel the Red Storm to a 6-4 victory over Cal State Stanislaus. This was the first meeting since their match-up at the Division II Softball West Super Regional last year in Saint George. Dixie State is playing at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions hosted by CSU-Stanislaus.
The Red Storm (17-9) trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the 5th inning when Katelyn Nelson earned a leadoff walk and then Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) was hit by a pitch. Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Nelson and Mendenhall into scoring position.
Cue Egge, she deposited the pitch over the left centerfield fence to give the Red Storm the much needed come from behind victory. Shantae Hunter (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls High School) added an insurance run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth on a home run to left centerfield.
Brittnie Whipple pitched two and two thirds innings in relief of starter Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) to pick up her eighth win of the year.
HSU 2 DSC 9: This morning the Red Storm battled Humboldt State University and exploded for nine runs in the game, including four in the fifth frame and three in the seventh frame.
DSC took an early lead when McFarland stole home on a double steal and two pitches later Cassie Merrill singled to left field plating Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) giving DSC the 2-0 lead.
HSU tied the score in the bottom of the third inning and the game remained tied until the Top of the 5th inning when Merill doubled to left center scoring Kylee Higgins (Layton. UT/Layton High School).
Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) would draw a one out walk and steal second base and then score on a Hunter single through the left side of the infield. Mendenhall doubled to centerfield plating Hunter and then Mendenhall would score on McFarland's single to center. DSC would lead 6-2.
In the top of the 7th Mendenhall would leadoff with a single to left and McFarland would walk. Egge would hit the first of her 3-run homeruns on the day with a shot to right field.
Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) pitched a complete game allowing on four hits and striking out one picking up her 9th win of the year.
CSU 4 DSC 2: Despite taking a 2-1 lead in the top the 4th inning, the Red Storm and Brittnie Whipple couldn't hold Cal State University at Chico at bay in the final three frames losing 4-2.
Leading off the top of the 4th inning with a double down the leftfield line, Mendenhall would score on a failed pickoff attempt at third base tying the score at one. The next batter Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ), hit a solo home run to left field giving the Red Storm a 2-1 lead.
Brown and Nelson collected two hits a piece for DSC.
Dixie State will continue play at the Tournament of Champions with an early morning game at 8:00 AM against Cal State-Dominguez Hills and then an afternoon game at 2:15 PM against San Francisco State University. Sunday play will be determined by the outcome of tomorrow's games.
