Red Storm edge Silverswords of Chaminade in doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAINT GEORGE, UT - Anytime the entire batting order cycles thru, it raises eyebrows.

And Dixie State's speedy centerfielder Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) is no different.

"I always get off guard, like 'Wait, I'm on deck?'" Hicken said. "Then I grab my stuff and get up to bat."

Hicken and the Red Storm had plenty of opportunities offensively in a doubleheader sweep of Chaminade Monday.

Dixie State won the first game 16-7 before shutting out the Silverswords 11-0 in the nightcap - both in run-shortened affairs.

"When the top of our lineup starts to produce, everyone wants to swing it well," Dixie State coach Randy Simikins said. "We swung it well today. It was nice to see that. Any time you score 27 runs in two games, that's getting it done."

Hicken is the leadoff hitter, and usually sets the tone for the Red Storm. She crossed the plate five times as part of a 2-for-5 day - well below her .507 batting average entering the games. Hicken also knocked in a pair of RBI.

She understands her role and the importance of getting on base.

"Whether I have a good at-bat, it picks the rest of my team - especially if I get on," she said. "It means a lot for the rest of the game, so I try and get on as much as I can."

In the opening game, the Red Storm benefited from seven Chaminade (13-17, 10-12 Pac West) errors. Three occurred in the first inning, allowing the Red Storm (13-8, 8-4) to put up eight runs.

"It was uncharacteristic of them," Simkins said. "They're probably a better defensive team than what they showed in that first game. Once you start to commit errors against our lineup and give us four or five outs in the inning ... we really make you pay for that."

The Silverswords fought back in the third with a six-run inning, but a pair of four-run innings put the Red Storm out of reach.

In the second game, Dixie State put up another eight-spot in the first inning and added three more in the third to seal the game.

Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) and Brittnie Whipple picked up wins for the Red Storm. Folta improved to 7-5, while Whipple moved to 6-3.

“Save the one inning in the first game, our pitchers threw really well," Simikins said. "Obviously, we needed them to throw well. I was really pleased with both of them."
