Red Storm triumph over Grand Canyon 93-88

Daniels scores 23 and Ingraham add 22

SAINT GEORGE, UT-The Dixie State College women's basketball was searching for revenge for last Saturday's 67-78 loss to Grand Canyon, tonight they got that opportunity and capitalized by defeating the Antelopes (12-7, 6-2 PACWEST) 93-88 inside the Burns Arena.

In the first half the Red Storm (10-7, 6-2 PACWEST) shot a stellar 60 percent from the floor. Senior guard Jessie Ingraham (Tuscon. AZ/Canyon Del Oro) hit three three-pointers and scored 15 of her 22 points in the first half. DSC led 56-40 at the half.
 
Coach Angie Kristensen said, “That is the best half of basketball that we have played all year.”
 
Dixie State continued to dominate the game, leading by as many as 21 points with 16:29 left. Dixie State would maintain a double digit lead until Grand Canyon's Stacy Haddow would hit a three pointer with 4:04 left that would cut the Red Storm lead to 8 points.
 
That's when the wheels came off and the Antelopes started their stampede. Preseason PacWest Player of the Year Samantha Murphy would lead the Antelopes on a game closing 18-2 run that would cut the Red Storm lead to two points with 1:08 left.
 
Dixie State would miss a jumper with 38 seconds left and GCU point guard Kia Gibson would miss the game tying lay-up on a fast break with 33 second remaining. DSC would close the game out by hitting five free-throws to secure the victory. The Red Storm shot a dismal 29 percent in the second half
 
DSC was led by freshman forward Deanna Daniels (North Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) who scored 23 points on 9-12 shooting and added 5-5 from the charity stripe. Daniels also added eight rebounds. Freshman Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
 
Murphy would lead all scorers with 33 points and was 16-17 from the charity stripe. Kia Gibson collected a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
 
DSC shot 45.3 percent from the field compared to Grand Canyon's 45.3 percent. Both teams shot the ball well from the free-throw line, with DSC connecting on 31 of 39 and GCU was 24 of 28.
 
The Red Storm continues their season on Sunday, February 14 at 8:30pm Mountain time in the first of four games on the Hawaiian Islands against the Vulcans of Hawaii-Hilo.
