Red Storm blast BYU-Hawaii in PacWest softball doubleheader

Mendenhall had three hits, 2 HR, 6 RBI on the day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAIE, HI- The #4 ranked Red Storm of Dixie State softball team opened up its PacWest Conference play with a bang today by defeating Brigham Young-Hawaii University in a run-rule shortened doubleheader 11-1 and 8-0.

In game one Dixie State (5-2, 2-0 PWC) scored in every frame of the five-inning affair. Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) lead the game off by beating out a hit to the shortstop and followed by stealing second base. Hicken then scored on a Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) RBI double into right center. Dixie State would add its second run of the inning when Kylee Higgins (Layton. UT/Layton High School) would draw an RBI bases loaded walk. The Red Storm would 2-0 after one inning.

In the second frame, Katlyn Nelson (Wilsonville. OR/Wilsonville High School) (Wilsonville. OR, Wilsonville High School) would lead off the inning with a walk, followed by an infield single from Hicken. With runners at first and second Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) singled to center field scoring Hicken. Shantae Hunter (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls High School) who reached on a fielder's choice would score when Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) would get an RBI single to left center. DSC would build their lead to 4-0.

In the third frame Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) would draw a leadoff walk and score when Kylee Higgins (Layton. UT/Layton High School) sacrifice bunt was thrown away allowing the Red Storm lead to build their lead to 5-1.



Dixie State would take advantage of a throwing error on a Hicken ground ball to lead off the fourth inning. Hicken would then steal second and score for the second time in the game on an RBI single from Egge. After singles from Cue and McFarland, Mendenhall would draw an RBI walk scoring Egge. DSC would add two unearned runs to end the frame and lead 9-1.

In the fifth inning, Mendenhall would pick up two RBI on a double down the left field line. She would finish with three RBI on the game.

Dixie State hurler Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) would work four innings striking out seven and allowing only two hits and one earned run, picking up her third win of the season. Jessica Tracy would close out the final inning for the Red Storm, she struck two of the three batters that she faced.

Hicken, Egge, Cue and McFarland each had two hits of the 10 hit the Red Storm would collect in the first game.

In the second game of the double-header, the Red Storm would prevail again defeating BYU-Hawaii (0-10, 0-2 PWC) 8-0.

Brittnie Whipple pitched six complete innings allowing only two hits and striking out eight to pick up her second win of the season.

Mendenhall would pick off where she left off in the first game, hitting a solo home run in the second inning and adding a two run home run in the fourth frame. On the day Mendenhall would finish 3-3 with a double, 2 HR, 4 BB, and six RBI.

Hicken, Cassi Merrill (Calgary, Alberta/Foundations for the Future Charter Academy), Mendenhall, Egge, Higgins each would have two hits of the eleven the Red Storm would collect in the game.
