Box Score

GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. (November 27) – Dixie State College trailed by three points at the half, but could not overcome the deficit after shooting an abysmal 4-for-21 from the field in the second half. The lack of buckets caused the Storm to drop a 65-57 decision to Mesa State College in the final day of the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic at the Brownson Arena.

Despite the 19-percent performance in the second half, Dixie State (4-3) remained within striking distance thanks to 16 points from the free throw line including the last 12 points scored in the game. The Mavericks (4-0) survived shooting 30.9-percent from the floor.

Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) led the Red Storm with 20 points (4-12 FG, 10-11 FT) and seven rebounds. Jeremiah Barnes (Compton, CA/Los Altos) scored eight of his 13 points from the charity stripe rounding out the DSC players in double figures.

The Red Storm pulled to within two at 42-40 with over 13 minutes remaining in the second half. Mesa State responded with an 11-4 run to push ahead 53-44 with 10:17 on the clock. The lead increased to 10 before the Storm chipped away from the charity stripe. Dixie State closed to 60-56 with four minutes, but did not hit another shot from the field.

Three foul shots and a bucket gave Mesa a comfortable cushion until the final horn. Kalonji Paschal led the Mavericks with 13 points. Nate Nelson added 11 and Michael Bear recorded a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds). The Mavs out-rebounded Dixie State 46-42.

Dixie State College returns to action next Saturday at home against Pacifica College. Tipoff at the Burns Arena is scheduled for 7:30pm.
