Tritons Spear Control of Disney Classic

UCSD defeats Dixie State 65-57 in Anaheim

BOX SCORE: UCSD 65, DSC 57

ANAHEIM, CALIF. (November 13) –
The Red Storm found themselves in a déjà-vu situation heading into the second half of their matchup with U.C. San Diego on Saturday night at the Disney West Coast Tip-Off Classic. DSC was down eight at the half, but could mount a comeback on this night as the Tritons defeated Dixie State 65-57 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Griffon Jones (Cheney, WA/Cheney) led the Red Storm (1-1) for the second consecutive game in scoring with 18 points on six-of-11 shooting. Jones was the only DSC player in double-figures followed by a trio with nine points – Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie), Everton Araujo (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Torquato Caleiro) and McKay Massey (Payson, UT/Payson).

Leading the Tritons (2-0) was center Christian Hatch with 20 points. He was one of four UCSD hoopsters with 10+ points.

The only lead Dixie State enjoyed occurred 12 seconds into the game when Jeremiah Barnes (Compton, CA/Los Altos) (0-4 FG) drained one of two free throw shots. U.C. San Diego scored the next four points and extended their lead to 36-28 at the half.

Dixie State remained lukewarm to start the second half allowing the Tritons to extend their lead to 44-35 at the 16:15 mark. Both teams went dry until the Storm began their major run four minutes later. Jones scored six points in an 8-2 DSC run capping the string with a dunk making the score 46-42.

The Red Storm stayed with four to six points until the seven-minute mark when the Tritons toughened up on defense. Hatch hit a jumper from the baseline with 90 seconds left putting UCSD up by a comfortable margin of nine.

UCSD outshot Dixie State 43-percent to 36-percent from the field while draining over 41-percent from beyond the arc. The Tritons also won the battle on the glass 35-27.

Dixie State will conclude the Anaheim trip with a early tip-off with Lewis University at 11am Pacific time (12pm Mountain). Live audio coverage will be available on KXDS 91.3FM and Network1Sports.com. IBN Sports will offer video feed for purchase from the Classic – the link can be found on DixieAthletics.com.
