SENIOR DAY: Red Storm Hosts Simon Fraser

Final home football game of 2010 season

THIS WEEK: Dixie State College will celebrate the 2010 football senior class on Saturday afternoon during the Red Storm's last home game of the year against Simon Fraser University. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm Mountain at Hansen Stadium. In addition to the game, the DSC Athletic Department will officially dedicate the Frank Habibian Weight Room and Wrestling Complex in a ceremony at 10:00am.

ON AIR: John Potter and Dr. Phil Tuckett will have live radio coverage on Classical 91.3FM with streaming at Network1Sports.com. On the television side, Jon Oglesby and Josh Sine have all of the action on KCSG. Live stats are provided on DSC's website, DixieAtheltics.com.

CELEBRATING SENIORS: Seventeen seniors will play their final games at Hansen Stadium against the Clan. The 2010 Senior football class includes: DL Nick Rocco (Sammamish, WA/Skyline), DB Dan Sumko (Brigham City, UT /Box Elder HS), LB Nick Cragin (Issaquah, WA/Skyline), WR Nash Fowler (Orem, UT/Timpanogas HS), TE Alex Nelsen (Brigham City. UT/Box Elder HS), WR Kyser Christensen (Boise. ID/Centennial), K/P Mike Langston (Riverside, CA/Ramona), RB Adam Wells (Kenmore. WA/Inglemoor), WR Cliff Leavitt (Kamas, UT/South Summit HS), S Jarrod Tennell, DL Jody Morgan (West Jordan, UT/West Jordan), LB Keauntea Bankhead (Seattle, WA/Ballard), OL Tyler Harris (Delta. UT/Delta), OL Braeden Dillon (Lodi, CA/Lodi), OL Thad Quist (Riverside, CA/Arlington), DL John Godineta and DL Chris Hill (Provo. UT/Timpview).

SERIES: In the first ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron, Dixie State scored a touchdown in every quarter en route to a 28-21 victory over the Clan in Burnaby on October 2. Jesse Ence (St. George, UT/Pine View) ran for 150 yards and a score while Cody Stevenson (Sandy, UT/Juan Diego) added three passing TDs in the Storm's lone win to date. The triumph also broke a string of futility away from Hansen Stadium – DSC had gone 23 months without a road victory. Simon Fraser was led by running back Gabe Ephard (107 yards) and linebacker Andrew Marshall with 11 tackles including three for loss.

LAST WEEK:
Dixie State found themselves down by a score within the first 20 second of the Humboldt State game in Arcata. Mike Proulx hit Patrick Gondkoff for a 66-yard strike putting the GNAC-leading Jacks up 7-0. After holding a 14-0 lead at the break, HSU got a defensive and special teams score to defeat DSC 28-3 on their homecoming night. Keauntea Bankhead (Seattle, WA/Ballard) was the star for the Red Storm accumulating a game-high 12 tackles. Sione Tapuosi (East Palo Alto. CA/Carlmont) accounted for 51 rushing yards filling in for Jesse Ence (St. George, UT/Pine View), who left the game with a shoulder injury. Cody Stevenson (Sandy, UT/Juan Diego) failed to throw a touchdown pass for the first time in his collegiate career. As for the Clan, they enjoyed an open date on their schedule one week after notching their first NCAA victory. Simon Fraser defeated cross-town rival UBC 27-20 in Shrum Bowl XXXIII. The Clan hopes to check of their next goal, a win in the GNAC, against the Red Storm.

RED STORM NOTES: With 151 teams competing in NCAA Division-II football, Dixie State sits at #121 in total offense (#66 passing, #138 rushing) and #96 in total defense (#105 rush, #83 pass). Individually, DSC has some noteworthy performers. Keauntea Bankhead (Seattle, WA/Ballard) tops the GNAC and is 8th in the nation in tackles. Nick Cragin (Issaquah, WA/Skyline) ranks second in GNAC tackles and #27 in the nation. Mike Langston (Riverside, CA/Ramona) is the 12th-ranked punter in the nation (#1 GNAC) and Nash Fowler (Orem, UT/Timpanogas HS) is #45 in receptions. Cody Stevenson (Sandy, UT/Juan Diego) is #3 in the GNAC in overall passing efficiency (124.50 rating).

SCOUTING THE CLAN:
Head coach Dave Johnson took the blame for the Clan's first loss to Dixie State earlier this month by saying he did not prepare the club well enough. Coming into this game, Simon Fraser has had nearly two weeks to recover from the jubilation of winning the Shrum Bowl against the University of British Columbia and focus on beating DSC. In the five games counting toward NCAA statistics, running back Gabe Ephard leads SFU averaging nearly 150 total yards per contest. Bo Palmer ran wild last game against UBC and adds an extra threat out of the backfield. Quarterback Ryan Schwartz has completed 44% of his passes this year for three touchdowns and six interceptions. His favorite targets are Mathis Baumbach and Taylor Wilkinson. Defensively, the secondary was getting most of the stops earlier in the year, but an improved linebacking core with Andrew Marshall at the helm has made the Clan D much more formidable. One question that may have been resolved was the kicking game. Safety Marc DesLauriers has taken over the place kicking duties from Jeff Biles.
