WVB: Red Storm drop five set match to Academy of Arts

Shearer had 14 kills, Fitzgerald adds 13 in loss

SAINT GEORGE, UT-You can call the Dixie State College volleyball team Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. For the second consecutive night, the Red Storm dropped a five game match to Academy of Art University 22-25, 14-25, 25-21, 25-15, 13-15.

 

Similar to last night, Dixie State (7-5, 2-2 PacWest) dropped the first two sets. DSC committed 11 hitting errors in the second set and looked as if they had run out of steam.

 

Enter Mr. Hyde; the Red Storm crawled their way back to take the third set 25-21. The Red Storm dominated the fourth set similar to the way Academy of Art (9-5, 5-0 PacWest) did the second set.  Dixie State committed on only two errors in the fourth set on their way to an easy 25-15 victory to force game five.

 

In game five, the Urban Knights jumped out to an early lead and looked to have it on cruise control and led 10-6. Dixie State then jumped on the back of Alex Shearer (Park City. UT/Park City) and Madisyn Fitzgerald (Mesa, AZ/Mountain View). The two combined for five of the next six Red Storm points and evened the match at 12-12.

 

Tied at 12, Dan Yang terminated a Melissa Cheng set to push the Urban Knights up 13-12. A kill by Nicolette Hagan gave AAU a 14-12 advantage.

 

Dixie State would not lie down; Kimee Clark set Melissa Fifita (Midvale, UT/Cottonwood) for a kill to bring the Red Storm within one at 14-13. The Urban Knights Angela Heath put DSC away for good with the game winner.

 

The Urban Knights were led for the second consecutive night by Dan Yang's 23 kills. Melissa Chang added 24 assists.

 

Shearer collected 14 kills and Fitzgerald added 13 for the Red Storm. Kimee Clark had 37 assists and Jayci Jeffress (Brighton. CO/Brighton) added 21 digs for the match.

 

Dixie State will be off will resume play next Friday at 5:00 PM in the Student Activities Center when they play host to Hawaii Pacific University.
