Box Score

ARCATA, CALIF. (October 16) – Patrick Gondkoff took the first offensive play from scrimmage to the end zone and later returned a kickoff to the same locale aiding the Humboldt State University Lumberjacks to a convincing 28-3 victory over Dixie State College in conference play at the Redwood Bowl on Homecoming Saturday night.

The Lumberjacks (6-1) remained undefeated at 5-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference getting 107 rushing yards from Lyndon Rowells and two touchdown passes from junior quarterback Mike Proulx.

Cody Stevenson (Sandy, UT/Juan Diego) went without a touchdown pass for the first time this season in a starting role for Dixie State (1-6, 1-5 GNAC). The quarterback completed 14-of-31 passes for 152 yards while getting sacked by the Jacks defense three times.

Sione Tapuosi (East Palo Alto. CA/Carlmont) became the featured tailback in the second half recording 51 yards on 13 carries after Jesse Ence (St. George, UT/Pine View) (28 yards on 18 attempts) injured his shoulder late in the first half.

Linebackers Keauntea Bankhead (Seattle, WA/Ballard) (12 tackles, 0.5 TFL), Nick Cragin (Issaquah, WA/Skyline) (8 tackles) and Christian Case (West Jordan, UT/West Jordan) (7 tackles, 1.0 TFL) paced the Dixie State defense.

Only 20 seconds had escaped the first quarter clock before Humboldt State lit up the scoreboard. Gondkoff took a short screen pass on first down from Proulx and scampered 66 yards to the house.

The Jacks' first attempt to double the lead was called back on a holding call after Elsie Gatson picked off Stevenson at midfield. A turnover, Justin Hornsby forcing an Ence fumble, did set up an eventual 26-yard TD pass to Kevin Miles for HSU's 14-0 halftime lead.

Early in the third, Humboldt defensive end Phillip Edwards capitalized on the Red Storm's second turnover returning a fumble 23 yards for a score.

Dixie State got on the scoreboard with 9:49 remaining in the third quarter. Mike Langston (Riverside, CA/Ramona) hit from 37 yards on his first field goal attempt of the season cutting the HSU lead to 21-3.

Gondkoff took the ensuing kickoff at the 17-yard line and followed a three-man blocking wedge to the sideline going nearly untouched for an 83 yard special teams touchdown.

Both teams would gamble multiple times on fourth down in a scoreless fourth quarter.

Jonathan Faraimo of led all HSU defenders with 11 tackles followed by eight a piece by Chris Peterson and Mike Lynch. The Jacks travel to Central Washington next week for a critical GNAC contest.

Dixie State College will close out their home schedule next Saturday, October 23, against the Clan of Simon Fraser University. Kickoff on Senior Day is set for 1:00pm at Hansen Stadium.
