ST. GEORGE, UTAH – Led by Donovan Plunkett (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas)'s 19 points and a Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) double-double, the Dixie State College Red Storm kept their Pacific West Conference record unblemished edging the Chaminade Silverswords 82-71 on Saturday night in front of 2,874 fans inside the Burns Arena.
Dixie State (8-3, 2-0 PacWest) had four starters in double figures paced by Plunkett (6-12 FG, 4-7 3PT). Whitehead netted 18 points with 10 rebounds, Andy Palmer (St. George. UT/Pine View) had 15 in a bounce-back game and Adam Ross (Torrance. CA/North Torrance ) scored 10 making three shots from beyond the arc. The Red Storm shot 43-percent from the floor while never trailing to the visiting Silverswords.
DSC enjoyed a 14-point halftime lead and sustained the paltry advantage until the game's final three minutes. Chaminade got a pair of three-balls from Shane Hanson and lay-ups from Steven Bennett and Dominique Cooks to get within five. Dixie State would ice the game with a 6-0 run from the foul line.
Freshman center Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) ripped down a game-high 12 rebounds helping the Storm win the team battle of the boards 51 to 35. The 51 rebounds set a Dixie State record since moving to Division-II.
Bennett had 20 points to lead Chaminade and Cooks chipped in 12 points.
Dixie State begins a three-game road swing on Thursday, January 14 at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, CA. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30pm Pacific time, 8:30pm Mountain.
