Battle of Pac West Unbeatens on Saturday: DSC vs. Chaminade

 

UP NEXT: Dixie State College of Utah continues Pacific West Conference play against the Chaminade University Silverswords in the Burns Arena on Saturday, January 9 at 7:30 pm.

 

THE RECORDS: DSC enters the game with a 7-3 record after upending the BYU-Hawaii Seasiders 86-78 on January 9 in the Pac West Conference opener. The Red Storm have a 5-0 record inside the Burns Arena this season. Chaminade sports a 4-6 record coming off a nine-point win on the road against Grand Canyon.

 

ALL-TIME SERIES: The Red Storm and Silverswords have played five previous times since Dixie State jumped to Division-II. Chaminade leads the all-time series 3-2. The teams split a pair of game last season. Ryan Sanchez (Ogden. UT/Fremont) hit a leaning jumper late in DSC's 66-64 win on national television. Chaminade held home court beating the Storm 75-65.

RED STORM WATCH: Dixie State has won two games in a row including a thrilling conference triumph over last season's champion, the BYU-Hawaii Seasiders. Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) leads the team in scoring average at a 15.9 point per game clip. Donovan Plunkett (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas) (12.9) and Andy Palmer (St. George. UT/Pine View) (10.9) also average double figures through five games. Freshman Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) paces the club pulling down 7.1 rebounds a game with Palmer and Whitehead following at 4.9 boards a piece. Dixie State averages 72.5 points a game shooting 46.5% FG while allowing 68.1 points to opponents.

---Starting Time Change – The January 30th game on the road at Grand Canyon will tipoff at 7pm instead of 7:30pm. The change was announced by both colleges on Wednesday.

 

SCOUTING CHAMINADE: Don't let the 4-6 record fool you, the Chaminade SIlverswords are a talented team. Three losses came to Division-I opponents (Maryland, Vanderbilt and Colorado) in the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Junior transfer Steven Bennett paces Chaminade with 16.6 points per game including a season high 30 against Grand Canyon. Shane Hanson also average double figures (11.9). Chandler Pearson cleans the glass with eight rebounds a game. Matt Mahar is at the helm of the program and has compiled a 75-46 record in five seasons at Chaminade.
