Red Storm lose to Grand Canyon 78-67

Brown scores career high 24 points in loss

Box Score PHOENIX, AZ-Despite the Dixie State College Women’s Basketball team forcing Grand Canyon to 27 turnovers, they couldn’t overcome the shooting prowess of the Antelopes and the Red Storm would lose the game 78-67. Entering tonight’s game, the Red Storm (9-7, 5-2) and Grand Canyon (12-6, 6-1) were scheduled to play two consecutives games against each other. The games are set one week apart with each playing host once. Tonight’s matchup had the two pair tied for 2nd place in the PacWest women’s basketball standings, with only one team walking away maintaining pace with 1st place Hawaii Pacific who defeated Academy of Art 79-57 on Saturday night. Junior guard Veronica Siqueiros (Phoenix, AZ/Trevor G Brown) would hit two free throws with 17:20 left to give the Red Storm the early 8-7 lead. After the Antelopes would regain the lead, junior guard Amber Scruggs (Los Angeles, CA/Narbonne) would lead a Red Storm run by hitting three of her 12 points with 13:09 left tying the game at 13. Grand Canyon would lead the rest of the way and at one point by as many as 14 points in the second half. Dixie State would have many opportunities to score, but could not convert the turnovers into points and would shoot a futile 30 percent from the floor. Coach Angie Kristensen said, “Our shots wouldn’t fall tonight, I’m proud of the way that our defense played. We played very hard and forced them into making bad decisions. Unfortunately we couldn’t convert.” Freshman forward Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) had a game high and career high 24 points. She also netted four steals and was 12-14 from the free-throw line. Freshman forward Deanna Daniels (North Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) added 14 points and a team high 6 rebounds. Leading Grand Canyon to victory was 17 points from Katrina Graham and Samantha Murphy added 14. The two teams will play again Saturday Feb 6th in Saint George. The tip off is set for 5:30 PM inside the Burns Arena. Listen to John Potter on 91.3 KXDS or on the internet at www.dixieatheltics.com.
