Quest for Bay Area Sweep Continues Against Dominican

 

UP NEXT: Dixie State College of Utah plays the Penguins of Dominican University on Monday, January 18 at 8:30pm Mountain time inside the Conlan Center.

 

THE RECORDS: DSC enters the game with a 10-3 record – winning the first stop stops on the current Bay Area trip. The Red Storm moved above the break-even mark with a 4-3 record away from the Burns Arena this season. Dominican University competes in the Pac West for the first time and picked up their first conference win over GCU on Thursday. The Penguins are 4-10 on the year and 1-2 in the Pac West.

 

ALL-TIME SERIES: Tonight marks the first ever meeting between Dixie State and Dominican in Division-II competition.

RED STORM WATCH: Dixie State has won two road games in a row after finishing the 2009 calendar year with back-to-back losses to GNAC teams in non-conference action. Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) leads the team in scoring average at a 14.8 point per game clip. Donovan Plunkett (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas) (13.3) and Andy Palmer (St. George. UT/Pine View) (12.1) also average double figures through five games. Freshman Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) paces the club pulling down 7.2 rebounds a game with Palmer (5.7) and Whitehead (5.2) following. Dixie State averages 73.8 points a game shooting 47.6% FG while allowing 66.8 points to opponents.

--- The Red Storm has a five-game winning streak for the first time since November 2004 – the first as a D-II school.

--- Through 13 games, Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) ranks second in career rebounding average. His 7.2 rebounds a game ranks behind formed DSC assistant coach Kasey Winters (9.6) and ahead of Ryan Sanchez (Ogden. UT/Fremont) who ranks third (6.0).

--- Schedule Time Change – The January 30th game on the road at Grand Canyon will tipoff at 7pm instead of 7:30pm.

 

SCOUTING DOMINICAN: The Penguins complete a seven-game home stretch tonight against the Red Storm. Dominican is 2-4 in the previous six, but did win their first Pac West game against Grand Canyon. Freshman guard Austin Bryan leads the squad with 16.5 PPG and forward Alex Ward chips in 11.9 points per contest. Xander McNally tops nearly every assist category in the Pac West. Veteran head coach Bret Tovani is in his fifth year at Dominican and 35th overall. He has compiled a 68-64 collegiate record in the NAIA and NCAA.
