Red Storm run by Mavericks, remain undefeated

Shearer lead DSC with 10 kills

SAINT GEORGE, UT-The Dixie State College volleyball team defeated Mesa State College 25-14, 23-25, 25-15, and 25-23. With the victory the Red Storm improved to their school best 5-0 start and remain undefeated.

At the beginning of the first game, it appeared the Mavericks (1-4) were here to prove their record wrong. With the game at 10-9, Freshman Brita Noble (Taylorsville, UT, Taylorsville) rattled off 10 straight serves that built the lead to 20-10. During the run senior outside hitter Katie Luna (Mesa. AZ, Westwood High '05, Scottsdale CC) collected 3 of her 9 kills. Dixie State wound up winning the game 25-14.

Game two featured a different tone than game one. Mesa State trailed 18-10 and battled back to defeat the Red Storm 23-25. Meagan Bosch collected seven kills in the Mavericks run. Game three was much like the first game, with the Red Storm running away with the game 25-15. Sophomore Alex Shearer (Park City. UT, Park City) helped lead DSC with six of game high 10 kills in game three.

Game four saw Dixie State run out to an early 8-2 lead, only to see the Mavericks storm back and play neck and neck. With the match tied at 16, the Mavericks Alison Tompkins committed a service error adn the Red Storm never look back from there. Chelsi Dewitt (Mesa. AZ, Westwood, Scottsdale CC) rattled off six strait serves that helped DSC build a 22-17 lead. The Mavericks never gave up, capitalizing on passing mistakes made by the Red Storm. They were able to get within one at 24-23. That when Noble closed out the match with her 7th kill of the match.

Coach Gregg Jensen said, "We played well enough to win tonight, I felt like we could have passed the ball better." "I will take the win." Defensively for Dixie State Morgan Hill (Logan. UT, Logan) added 4 solo blocks, and Dixie State recored 9 total blocks.

Dixie State will travel tomorrow for a tournament in Durango, Colorado. They will play in a tournament being hosted by Fort Lewis College. They are scheduled to play Adams State College, Fort Lewis College, University of Colorado Colorado Springs, and Cal Poly Pomona.
