#19 Dixie opens up Tourney with win over 5th ranked Humboldt State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 (DSC SOFTBALL) -- TURLOCK, Calif. (DSC) – Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) and Brittney Whipple led 19th-ranked Dixie State to a 4-3 victory over fifth-ranked Humboldt State to highlight play in the Mizuno Tournament of Champions Friday. The Red Storm (32-8) got a shutout performance from Jessie Kaonihi in a 5-0 victory over the University of California San Diego in the second game of pool play. Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) had a home run in that game. Cal State Stanislaus spoiled an otherwise good day by downing Dixie State 6-0 in the third game of the day. “It was a good start to the tournament,” said DSC coach Beth Collett of the win over Humboldt State. “We also had a good middle game but I was disappointed in the last game. “Jessie pitched well against San Diego,” Collett said. “It was good to see her get the complete game. “We had pretty solid pitching for the most part,” Collett continued. “Against Humboldt our bats came alive; we hit the ball hard,” she said. “We were aggressive and made things happen. We were up 4-0 until they got their runs in the sixth inning.” In the third game of the day, Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) and Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) each had two of the Red Storm’s five hits as they struggled to get anything going offensively. Haley Schumers (Plain City. UT/Freemont High School) had the other. Folta started the game and gave up four hits in three and one-third innings. She was the loser. Whipple and Kaonohi also pitched in relief. The tournament continues Saturday. The Red Storm will play Cal State San Bernadino and Sonoma State.
