ST. GEORGE, UTAH – Dixie State College split a doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at Bruce Hurst Field. Tyson Bailey (Mesa. AZ/Westwood HS) pitched a complete game in Dixie State's 4-1 early game triumph while the Toros scored six runs answered to comeback and claim the nightcap 7-5. The split moves Dixie State's record to 19-12 on the year while the 23rd-ranked Toros sit at 21-15. Bailey faced the minimum amount of batters through 5 2/3 innings before allowing hit first base hit to Sean Beckley. Only an Andrew Baslow solo homer to lead off the seventh kept Bailey from his second complete game shutout of the year. The right-hander surrendered the lone run on four hits while striking out eight to win his fifth consecutive start (5-0). The Red Storm got all the offense they would need in the first off Toro starter Kody Kurowski (L, 5-2) with RBI singles by Jimmy Dever (Tuscon. AZ/Catalina Foothills HS) and Alex Rosenhan (Highland. UT/Alta HS) while Abe Candaleria (Camarillo. CA/Camarillo HS) tallied a run when he was plunked with the bases loaded. Aaron Friend (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) added a DSC run in the fourth knocking in Candaleria. Dixie State had eight hits in the game – Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) had two doubles while Friend added two singles. CSUDH scored early in game two, but Dixie State took a 5-1 lead in the second inning after Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) and Candaleria each hit two-run homers. Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) could not hang on to the four-run lead allowing an RBI double to Jon Alia in the third and three more Dominguez Hills runs in the fifth. CSUDH scored twice in the sixth inning off reliever Phil Finley (Washington. UT/Pine View HS) after an 11-minute rain delay. Paul Klingsberg's two-run single with one out proved to be the game-winner. Klingsberg actually closed out the game on the mound after Michael Cruz threw 3 2/3 innings of shutout ball to earn the win (5-2). Both teams compiled 10 hits in game two. Klingsberg paced Dominguez Hills with three hits while Alia knocked in three. Tim Mott (Las Vegas. NV/Las Vegas HS) and Oldfield each contributed three hits for Dixie State. The series finale is Saturday at Bruce Hurst Field with scheduled first pitch at Noon. Catch the live call on Sports Radio 1210 with Mike McGary and Andy Griffin.
