Red Storm sweep Cal State San Bernardino

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 2, 2009 TURLOCK, Calif. (DSC) – Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) drove in five runs to help Dixie State sweep a softball doubleheader from California State-San Bernadino 4-3 and 9-1 on Thursday. The wins came on the night before the Mizuno Tournament of Champions. “These wins were a great way to set the tone for this weekend,” said Dixie State coach Beth Collett. “We did what we wanted to do although the first game was a little closer than we would have liked.” The 19th-ranked Red Storm (31-7) got the winning run in the ninth inning of the first game when Mendenhall singled to bring home Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School), who was on second base under the international tiebreaker rule. Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) picked up the pitching win as she scattered seven hits and struck out five. She pitched all nine innings. The win was her 10th against one loss. Dixie State opened that game with two runs in the first. Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) started things with a single with one out. After a second out, Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) walked. Mendenhall then singled to drive in one run. Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) doubled home the second. The Coyotes (14-24) scored twice in the second to tie the game at 2-2. They took a 3-2 lead in the fifth but the Red Storm tied it in the sixth. McFarland started that rally when she walked. She advanced on Mendenhall’s sacrifice bunt and scored when the Coyotes’ second baseman committed an error on the play. Hicken and Mendenhall each had two of Dixie State’s eight hits. In the second game Mendenhall had one hit, a first-inning home run to drive in three runs. Dabney McIntyre (Taylorsville. UT/Taylorsville High School), Hicken, McFarland and Egge each had two hits for the Red Storm. Egge also drove in two runs. “Kelsey was seeing the ball pretty well,” Collett said. “That was a good way to start the second game.” Jessie Kaonohi (Lancaster. CA/Antelope Valley High School) pitched a complete game, striking out six while scattering five hits. The Red Storm will begin play in the tournament Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They will play Humboldt State, the University of California-San Diego and Cal State-Stanislaus on Friday. “We feel good about where we are, swinging the bats and playing good defense,” Collett concluded.
