Red Storm Defeat GCU; Finish 11-0 at Home (3/6/2009)

ST. GEORGE. UTAH – In the regular season finale. the Dixie State Red Storm completed an undefeated home schedule with a 69-61 win over Grand Canyon University on Senior Night inside the Burns Arena.



Dixie State ends the 2008-2009 season with a 17-10 record overall and an 8-4 mark in the Pacific West Conference. The home win moved DSC's mark to an undefeated 11-0 inside the Burns.



The Antelopes ended at 16-11. but will compete in the NCAA Division II Tournament through the Pac West Conference champion's automatic bid.



Seniors Deney Phommabout (West Valley CIty. UT/Hillcrest) (West Valley City/Otero) with 17 points and Courtney Boyd (Keokuk. IA/Keokuk) (Keokuk/Kirkwood) with 12 points led the Red Storm in scoring. Two DSC players finished with 10 – junior guard Jessie Ingraham (Tuscon. AZ/Canyon Del Oro) (Tucson/Pima) and junior center BreAnne Haslam (Mountain Green. UT/Morgan) (Mountain Green/Salt Lake).



Tanya Clark (Beaumont. CA/Beaumont) (Beaumont/AZ Western) pulled down a 13 rebounds. matching her season high. for Dixie State.



Neither team could establish a big lead in the first half. Dixie had a five point lead at the 16:39 mark after a 7-0 run. GCU would bounce back and take their biggest lead of the game of six. 25-19. with 9:45 left in the first. The competitive half saw eight lead changes and three ties before Grand Canyon took a 37-35 lead into the half.



The teams traded baskets over the 4:30 of the second half and GCU led 51-47 with 7:47 left after two Stacy Haddow free throws. Dixie started their game-defining run on back-to-back threes from Ingraham. Phommabout would cap the DSC 13-0 spurt with 5 straight points on two free throws and a three pointer to give the Red Storm the lead at 60-51.



Free throw makes by Boyd and Clark in the last two minutes iced the season-finale victory.



"(Our seniors) played unbelievable tonight. I cannot thank them enough for what they have done for this program"; said Dixie head coach Angela Kristensen in a post-game interview.
