Red Storm Women Hold Off Grand Canyon (3/5/2009)

ST. GEORGE. UTAH – The Dixie State College of Utah women's basketball team was able to hold off the Pacific West champion Grand Canyon Antelopes 67-63 Thursday night in the Burns Arena to ensure a second place finish within the conference.



Dixie State improved to 16-10 on the year and 8-4 in Pac West play. Grand Canyon (16-10. 9-3) dropped its third in a row and fourth out of the last five.



Tanya Clark (Beaumont. CA/Beaumont) (Beaumont/AZ Western) notched her fourth double-double of the year pacing DSC with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Seniors Deney Phommabout (West Valley CIty. UT/Hillcrest) (West Valley City/Otero) and Courtney Boyd (Keokuk. IA/Keokuk) (Keokuk/Kirkwood) each had 11 points. Shanae Vaifanua (Hurricane, UT/Hurricane) (Hurricane) rounded out the four Red Storm players in double-figures with 10.



Dixie State trailed for most of the first half. but took control after a timeout with 8:46 left. Down three at that point 23-20. the Red Storm rattled off 11 unanswered points as part of a 20-6 run to end the half up by 11.



The Antelopes wasted no time erasing the lead shooting 70-percent from the floor in the first three minutes of the second half and held the lead 51-50 before Dixie's defining run. Three layups by Phommabout. Clark and Jessie Ingraham (Tuscon. AZ/Canyon Del Oro) highlighted a 9-1 spurt to give DSC a seven point lead. A final charity shot from Phommabout with a second left iced the victory.



Samantha Murphy had 25 points and nine rebounds to lead the Antelopes.



The Red Storm shot 30-percent for the game (21-70) and 67-percent (21-31) from the free-throw line. DSC won the battle of the boards 56-47. Grand Canyon shot 24-64 (37.5-percent) and only 8-17 from the stripe (47-percent).



The regular season finale is Saturday night at 5:30pm against Grand Canyon. Dixie State will honor their four seniors – Phommabout. Boyd. Lindsey Chettinger (Sergeant Bluff. IA/Sergeant Bluff) and Jessica Carver (Layton. UT/Layton) - as they play their last game at home.
