Folta no-hits BYU Hawaii, helps Red Storm salvage series split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, Utah (DSC) – Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School), a freshman from Tooele, pitched a no-hitter as Dixie State beat BYU-Hawaii 6-0 in Pacific West Conference softball Saturday. The Seasiders’ Katresha Veazie, a senior from Grantsville, had one-hit the Red Storm (17-5, 28-6) in the first game of the doubleheader. Folta struck out nine and walked two. She also hit a batter. “She saved me,” Folta said of the play of the game, Shantae Hunter (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls High School)’s over-the-shoulder catch of a soft liner from Kim Artiaga in the fifth inning. “All our defense was amazing,” Folta continued. “I couldn’t do it without them.” Folta credited a couple of mechanical things her father noticed when she pitched against Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade earlier in the week. “My dad gave me a couple of things to work on. It was just things I wasn’t getting done all the way, like putting my weight all the way back. “I had a lot of confidence today,” Folta said. “My teammates and my coaches brought it back up.” The Red Storm collected nine hits with Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) and Kourtnie Schlacter (Mira Loma. CA/Jurupa Valley High School) each getting two. Mendenhall had a double and a triple while Schlacter had a single and a triple. She also had a run batted in. Hunter, Haley Schumers (Plain City. UT/Freemont High School) and Jaki Hawkins (Lakewood. WA/Lakes High School) also had RBIs. “We came back strong,” noted DSC coach Beth Collett. “And Lauren had good defense behind her.” In the first game, Veazie gave the Seasiders (5-11, 12-22) plenty to cheer about. Despite walking four, she had the Red Storm under control throughout. Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) had the only hit, a solo home run in the four inning. Next up for the Red Storm will be a visit to Cedar City for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Southern Utah on Tuesday. They will play in a California tournament Thursday through Saturday.
