Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School)'s double drove home
Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) with the winning run as Dixie State defeated Chaminade 3-2 in the second game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader on Friday. The 18th-ranked Red Storm won the first game 10-0.
Hicken opened the seventh inning with a single and took second on
Shantae Hunter (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls High School)'s sacrifice bunt. After
Haley Schumers (Plain City. UT/Freemont High School) singled, McFarland doubled to end the game. She had a solo home run in the second inning.
Chaminade (4-10, 5-23) took a 2-0 lead in the second but Dixie State (16-4, 27-5) closed on McFarland's home run. The Red Storm tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth when
Kylee Higgins (Layton. UT/Layton High School) singled home Breanne Egge, who had also singled.
Brittnie Whipple picked up the win in relief of
Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School). Whipple pitched two shutout innings.
The Red Storm finished with 10 hits. Schumers, McFarland, Higgins and Katelyn Peters each had two.
DSC coach Beth Collett praised Whipple. "She has this ability to come in and shut down the batters. And, because she's been so consistent, we play with confidence when she comes in."
Dixie State collected 10 hits in support of Schumers in the first game. She allowed Chaminade just three. Schumers had three hits of her own and a run batted in. McFarland and
Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) each had two hits.
In an unusual twist, three of the Red Storm's hits were triples.
Shantae Hunter (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls High School) had one with the bases loaded in the second inning. Schumers had one with one aboard in the third and
Kourtnie Schlacter (Mira Loma. CA/Jurupa Valley High School) had one with two aboard, also in the third.
The game went quickly as Schumers was in control throughout. She struck out three and didn't walk anyone. However, she did hit a batter.
The Red Storm will wrap up their home stand when they entertain BYU-Hawaii at noon on Saturday.
