Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, Utah (DSC) --
Haley Schumers (Plain City. UT/Freemont High School)' single in the eighth inning brought home Breanne Egge with the winning run as Dixie State beat Hawaii Pacific 5-4 to gain a Pacific West Conference doubleheader split on Thursday. The Sea Warriors won the opener 2-0.
Egge opened the eighth inning with a single. She moved up on sacrifice bunts from
Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) and
Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) before Schumers got her hit.
"I just wanted to get it deep enough to score the run," Schumers said. "I was just thinking we needed to get the run so Brittnie didn't get a loss on an amazing, amazing day of pitching."
Brittnie Whipple picked up the win in relief of Jessie Kaonihi. She pitched five-and-two- thirds innings after pitching three-and-one-third in the first game.
The Sea Warriors (12-2, 24-4) remained a game ahead of the Red Storm (14-4, 25-5) in the conference standings.
"This was a critical win for several reasons," said DSC coach Beth Collett. "We just needed to get our confidence back. Not that we had the best hits but it was enough to get it done."
Hawaii Pacific had shut out Dixie State in three straight games. The Red Storm scored four runs in the first inning as they capitalized on three Sea Warrior errors and
Jaki Hawkins (Lakewood. WA/Lakes High School)' bases-loaded double to build a 4-1 lead.
Hawaii Pacific tied the game on Taija Acierto's home run in the third inning after picking up a single run in the second. After that Whipple and HPU's Sherise Musquiz engaged in an old-fashioned pitching battle.
Hawaii Pacific had 14 hits but Whipple repeatedly pitched out of trouble. Dixie State finished with five hits. Egge had two of them.
Hawaii Pacific's Courtney Kessell handcuffed the Red Storm, allowing just two hits in the first game.
Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) had both singles. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt following the first one and stole second and third on the other one.
Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and moved to third on an error.
Acierto had a solo home run to open the fourth inning. Nicole Riviera singled home Kozy Toriano, who had singled, for the Sea Warriors' second run.
Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) started for the Red Storm and was the losing pitcher. Whipple pitched three and one-third innings of shutout relief. She pitched out of one bases-loaded jam to keep Dixie State within striking distance.
Dixie State will play Chaminade in a doubleheader which begins at 1 p.m. Friday. The Red Storm will play BYU-Hawaii at noon on Saturday.
