Dixie sweeps Notre Dame de Namur (03/01/09)

ST. GEORGE. Utah (DSC) – Dabney McIntyre (Taylorsville. UT/Taylorsville High School) and Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) each had three hits as Dixie State collected 19 in a 15-7 win over Notre Dame de Namur in Pacific West Conference softball Sunday.



McIntyre also had three runs bated in. Haley Schumers (Plain City. UT/Freemont High School). Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) and Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) each drove in two runs as the Red Storm (8-0. 19-1) completed a sweep of the Argonauts (0-4. 7-7-1). Dixie State won the first game 6-1.



Notre Dame de Namur jumped on DSC starting pitcher Jessie Kaonohi (Lancaster. CA/Antelope Valley High School) and led 2-0 after one inning. The Red Storm came back to lead 4-2 in the third. but the Argonauts tied it at 4-4 in the  bottom of the inning.



Brittnie Whipple came on to get the final two hits of the inning and pitched two additional innings to pick up her sixth win against one loss. Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) pitched the final two innings for the Red Storm.



All nine starters had at least one hit. And Kylee Higgins (Layton. UT/Layton High School). a late-inning substitute. had two.



The two teams combined for 28 hits and 10 errors. Notre Dame de Namur committed six.



"Our hitting has allowed us to make the mistakes we've made." said DSC coach Beth Collett. "I don't think our pitching was dominant but they got the job done."



In the opener Folta scattered five hits as the Red Storm downed the Argonauts.



McFarland had a bases-loaded double in the fifth inning to drive in three runs. The Red Storm managed six hits with six different players getting them.



Dixie State scored a pair of runs in the second inning to give Folta all the support she needed.



McFarland started things with a walk. Nellie Hardy was safe on a throwing error when she dropped a sacrifice bunt. McFarland scored. Hardy came home when Katlyn Peters singled up the middle.



McFarland's big hit came after Dabney McIntyre (Taylorsville. UT/Taylorsville High School) walked. Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) reached on an error and Haley Schumers (Plain City. UT/Freemont High School) walked.With the win Folta improved her record to 6-0.



The Red Storm will not play again until they travel to Hawaii for eight games March 14-19 against the league members in the Islands. They will begin that trip against BYU-Hawaii.



"It's good to have a little break now." Collett said. "Then we'll refocus for Hawaii."
