Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE. Utah – Haley Schumers (Plain City. UT/Freemont High School) and Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) had game-ending home runs as Dixie State defeated San Francisco Academy of the Arts 9-0 and 9-1 in non-conference softball Friday.
Egge had a pair of two-run home runs in the second game while Schumers had a grand slam in the first. Jaki Hawkins (Lakewood. WA/Lakes High School) also had a home run. giving Dixie State four for the doubleheader.
"We're batting with some power." said DSC coach Beth Collett. "And our pitching was great today. I was really happy with the way we came out and played."
Schumers gave up just three hits in the first game while Jessie Kaonihi surrended just two in the second.
Kaonihi struggled in the first inning of her game. giving up a run on an error. two walks and a sacrifice fly. The Red Storm ended the inning on a strange double play as Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) caught a fly ball. who relayed her throw to Hawkins at the plate to try for the second out. Hawkins then fired to Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) for the third out.
Dabney McIntyre (Taylorsville. UT/Taylorsville High School) had three hits and two RBIs for the Red Storm in the second game. Shantae Hunter (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls High School) had two hits and two RBIs and Egge had two hits and four RBIs. The Red Storm had 11 hits.
In the opener Schumers pitched four-and-two-thirds innings of no-hit ball. She also had a triple and ended the game on the run-rule when she hit a grand slam home run in the sixth inning.
Schumers struggled with her control. walking four. but she struck out seven. She didn't allow a base hit until Ashley Roy blasted a double off the fence with two outs in the fifth inning.
The Red Storm took control of the game with three runs in the third inning. Katlyn Peters started the inning with a bunt single. Hicken followed by beating out an infield hit. After McIntyre was hit by a pitch. Hunter singled home two runs. McIntyre stole home for the final run of the inning.
Dixie State picked up a single run in the fifth when Peters. who had singled. scored on a passed ball.
The Red Storm finished with five runs in the sixth. Hicken singled. McIntyre was hit by a pitch and Hunter was safe on an error ahead of Schumers' home run.
The two teams will play a single game. starting at noon. on Saturday.
