Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE. Utah (DSC) – Jesse Kaonohi pitched a four-hitter and got three-RBI support from Jaki Hawkins (Lakewood. WA/Lakes High School) as Dixie State downed Notre Dame de Namur 6-1 in the second game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader Saturday. The Red Storm won the first game 13-3.
Kaonihi gave up a home run to the Argonauts' Lindsay Crist to open the game. then scattered the other three hits. She got all the runs she needed when Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) and Haley Schumers (Plain City. UT/Freemont High School) singled to drive in runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Dabney McIntyre (Taylorsville. UT/Taylorsville High School) started that inning with a single . After Shantae Hunter (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls High School)'s sacrifice. Egge got her single to tie the game. Schumers doubled home the second run.
"It is easy to pitch with confidence because we have an awesome defense and a great offense." Kaonohi said. "That first batter was a wake-up call. I grooved it down the middle of the plate and she rocked it. After that I was pitching with more confidence. I hit my inside and my outside corners and that's what saved me."
The Red Storm (6-0. 17-1) collected 11 hits with Schumers getting three and McIntyre adding two.
"The girls are hitting well." said DSC coach Beth Collett. "It's contagious.
"But every day is a new day." she continued. "We're thrilled with the success we've had. but it's about being consistent."
In the opening game the Red Storm collected 16 hits. 15 of them singles. en route to the run-rule shortened game.
McIntyre had the only extra-base hit. a solo home run to open the third inning. Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) had three hits while McIntyre. Egge. Nellie Hardy and Katlyn Peters each had two. Mendenhall. Peters and Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) each had two runs batted in for the Red Storm.
Schumers ran her record to 5-0 in the circle as she pitched three-and-two-thirds innings. Brittnie Whipple pitched an inning and one-third of solid relief.
