Red Storm run over Argonauts (02/27/09)

BELMONT. Calif. (DSC) – Nick Howard (Sandy. UT/Jordan) scored 17 points and Bowie Jeffs (Castle Dale. UT/Emery) added 16 as Dixie State defeated Notre Dame de Namur 74-58 in Pacific West Conference men's basketball Friday night.

Jeffs got his last four points at the free throw line as the Red Storm (7-4. 13-11) survived a furious Argonaut comeback which had trimmed a 64-43 advantage to 66-56 with 4:09 left in the game. Howard added four points as DSC used an 8-0 burst to keep Notre Dame de Namur at bay.

Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) and Ryan Sanchez (Ogden. UT/Fremont) each scored 14 points for the Red Storm. who had a 32-19 advantage on the boards. Howard had six rebounds.

“All our guys played hard and we were able to play a lot of guys.” noted DSC coach Jon Judkins. “We moved the ball and found open guys all night.

Nick Howard (Sandy. UT/Jordan) had a good game after a good week of practice.” Judkins said. “Now we've got to do it again tomorrow night.”

Dixie State shot 50 percent from the field and was 12-for-12 from the free throw line in the second half. The Red Storm was 15-for-16 from the line in the game.

Dixie State led nearly the entire first half. The Red Storm used a 14-3 run to break from a 5-5 tie and led by as many as a dozen points in the half. The Argonauts closed to 28-22 with about six minutes left. but Jeffs and Sanchez had back-to-back baskets to give DSC another 12-point lead.

Jeffs had four 3-point baskets in the half and Whitehead added three. The Red Storm had eight treys during the first 20 minutes of play. DSC led 41-30 at the break.

The Red Storm and Argonauts will be in action again Saturday. The two will play at 7:30 p.m. Pacific time. The contest will not be a conference game. It will be broadcast on KDXU. 890 a.m.. and on the Internet. It will also be available at www.b2livetv.com on a pay-per-view basis.
