Red Storm Sweep Hawaii Hilo in Softball (02/20/09)

 ST. GEORGE. Utah (DSC) – Katlyn Peters and Haley Schumers (Plain City. UT/Freemont High School) each drove in three runs as Dixie State downed Hawaii-Hilo 9-5 in the second game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader Friday. The Red Storm took the opener 11-3.
 Schumers and Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) each had two-run home runs as the Red Storm (6-0. 13-1) opened the game with a four-run outburst in the first inning. Dixie State got three more runs on Peters’ three-run home run in the third.
 Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) picked up her fourth win without a loss. She had a two-hitter through four innings. but the Vulcans (1-7. 3-7) got to her over the final three innings.
 Dabney McIntyre (Taylorsville. UT/Taylorsville High School). Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) and Schumers each had two hits as the Red Storm collected 11 hits.
 “We re-focused.” Schumers said of the offensive explosion. “We wanted to come out and score a lot. We had seen their pitchers so we were on to them.”
 DSC coach Beth Collett said. “I feel good about 22 hits. “It was a great series. I was very proud of how they played.”
 Collett continued. “we gave some different people an opportunity and the kids stepped up.”
 Dixie State fell behind 3-0 in the third inning of the first game. but took the lead moments later. then steadily pulled away.
 The Red Storm committed five errors. three of them in the Vulcans’ big inning. but they had 11 hits. including Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School)’s solo home run and doubles from Schumers . McIntyre and Nellie Hardy.
 Hawaii-Hilo got its three runs on singles from Tessa Truong. Sarah Weisskopf and Amanda Tellez and those three errors.
 Dixie State bounced back in its half of the third inning. scoring four runs to take the lead for good. Hardy started things with her double. She advanced to third on a flyball out and came home on Dabney McIntyre (Taylorsville. UT/Taylorsville High School)’s single. Shantae Hunter (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls High School) was safe on an error and Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) singled home the second run. Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School) singled home the tying run.
 Egge scored what proved to be the winning run when she and McFarland worked the double steal to perfection.
 McIntyre’s double in the sixth inning drove in two runs. giving her three for the game. Egge and Schumers each drove in two runs.
 Brittnie Whipple picked up the pitching win in relief. She came on in the third inning and gave up just one hit during her stint.
 The Red Storm will be back in action Tuesday and Wednesday. entertaining Southern Utah.
