Eastern NM hands Dixie first loss of season

Dixie State picked up another win on the diamond Saturday. but its perfect record was sullied with a 5-3 defeat to Eastern New Mexico.

DSC is 8-1 after two weekends of play.

In the Red Storm's 9-4 victory over St. Martin's. Haley Schumers (Plain City. UT/Freemont High School) went 3-for-3 with a homer and got the win. Schumers (2-0) struck out 10 in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Ashley McFarland (Layton. UT/Layton High School). Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) and Bailie Hicken (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak High School) had two hits apiece. among them a homer from Mendenhall.

ENM jumped on DSC early in the second game with three runs in the first inning and never trailed. The Zias' Kristen Cruickshank had two home runs and four RBIs.

DSC's Breanna Egge (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial High School) and Nellie Hardy went deep. while Hicken went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases. Brittnie Whipple took the loss to run her record to 4-1.

The Red Storm had one last chance in the seventh. but Shantae Hunter (Idaho Falls. ID/Idaho Falls High School)'s laser with runners on second and third was gobbled up by the ENM third baseman for the final out.

"I think we're off to a good start." said DSC coach Beth Collett. "Obviously we would rather be 9-0. but they came out hitting the ball better than we did. I think if we had an extra inning we could have come back and beat them."



Dixie State closes out with one game today versus New Mexico Highlands University.
