Dixie State Storm the islands. defeat Hawaii Pacific (01/31/09)

HONOLULU. Hawaii (DSC) – Dixie State remained unbeaten in Pacific West Conference play late Saturday night by defeating Hawaii Pacific 77-58 in men's basketball play.

Ryan Sanchez (Ogden. UT/Fremont) scored 16 points to pace the Red Storm (5-0. 11-7) past the Sea Warriors (1-5. 7-9). He only scored one basket in the second half. but the Red Storm finished the game on a 30-16 run. Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) added 14 points. nine of them in the second half. He had a pair of putbacks to help Dixie State maintain an 11-point lead before the Red Storm pulled away for good. Bowie Jeffs (Castle Dale. UT/Emery) had 13 points.

Johnny Little (Murray. UT/Murray HS) had back-to-back 3-point baskets to start Dixie State on its final run. He finished with eight points.

With the win. Dixie State set up a showdown with BYU-Hawaii. which is also 5-0 in league play. on Monday night. The game will be broadcast live on KDXU. 890 A.M.. and on the Internet at www.dixieathletics.com. The Red Storm will be at Chaminade on Wednesday and at Hawaii-Hilo next Saturday.

Sanchez got Dixie State off to a fast start as he scored nine points during a 13-4 run in the opening moments of the first half. Hawaii Pacific closed within 39-35 late in the half before Sanchez hit a 3-point basket to give the Red Storm a 42-35 lead at the break.

“Defensively against the things we knew they were going to run and worked on in walk-through. we did a very good job on that.” said DSC coach Jon Judkins. “But they hurt us with their athleticism.

“We did a great job on (Jason) Curtis.” Judkins said. “He's their leading scorer and he only got 10 points.”

Mike Helton. who averages 11 points. led Hawaii Pacific with 22.
